UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SASH FASTENER John M. Kuebler, Wausau, Wis.
Application January 19, 1935, Serial No. 2,469
1 Claim. (01. 292-238) The invention relates to sash fasteners. member and tending to exert an outward ten- The object of the invention is to provide a sion on said flat parts so as to prevent air passsash of the uncounterweighted type which has ing around the sides of the groove I0. good weather sealing properties and at the same It has been previously noted that the invention time may be held in different open positions. is directed to sash of the uncounterweighted 5 While pawl and ratchet sash-fasteners are not type, i. e. there are no counterbalancing weights broadly new, most of these are not suitable for or springs to assist in holding the sash in any use in private homes because of unsightly exposition of vertical adjustment, and as a conseposed parts. According to the present invention quence a sash fastener has to be provided for the sash-fastener elements are concealed in the holding the sash in open position. According to 10 window sash and one of these elements forms a the present invention the member II which is part of the weather seal. preferably of wood is formed with one or more The invention further consists in the several locking notches I6 and ratchet or stop notches features hereinafter set forth and more particu- I! on its inner face adjacent the inner side of larly defined by the claim at the conclusion the groove I0 and cooperates with a gravity ac- 15 hereof. tuated metal latch member I8 which is mounted In the drawing, to swing in a mortise I9 in the sash upon a metal Fig. 1 is an elevation view of a sash structure p vo p 0 Which is p d in a bo 2| n embodying the invention, parts being broken said sash which extends on both sides of said away and parts being shown in section; mortise. This latch I8 has a constant tendency 20 Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view similar to to swing into a locked or stop position and is Fig. 1 with parts shown in section as indicated adapted to be released therefrom by an actuator along the line 22 of Fig. 3; in the form of a pin 22 screwed into or other- Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view wise suitably fastened to said latch at a point taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; offset from its pivot and working in a slot 23 in 25 Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view the. sash. To hold the pin 20 against working showing certain modifications. loose and to prevent wear of the pin 22 at the Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 desigends of the slot 23, a. plate 24 is secured to the nates the fixed frame and 6 the window sashes Sash by Sc w 25 and p j Over the p e slidably mounted in said frame. The lower sash end of the bore 2| and has a slot 26 therein 30 is mounted to slide between guide strips I and 8 alined with the slot 23 and through which the at the sides of the fixed frame 5 and the upper pin 22 extends. sash is mounted to slide between the extension Thus when the latch I8 is in the lower notch of the guide strip 8 and frame strip 9. The I6 the sash is closed and locked except against features hereinafter described may be used with opening from the inside and the upper notch I6 35 either the upper or lower sash, but they have also provides for locking it in a partially open been shown more in detail in connection with position which opening is not large enough to the lower sash. permit tampering with the latch from the out- Each sliding sash has a mortise or vertically side. On a release of the latch I8 from either extending groove III at each side thereof and a of the notches I6 the sash may be raised and 40 member II is disposed therein and secured to held in various positions of vertical adjustment the fixed frame 5 and cooperates with the sash by the latch engaging in any one of the notches to form a part of a weather seal. In Fig. 4 the H, it being noted that said latch will ratchet member II has been shown as disposed in close past these notches IT as the sash is raised and relation to the sides of the groove III to provide automatically drop into a lower' one of said 45 a weather seal while in Figs. 1 to 3 the member notches as the sash is lowered and that for re- II has a flexible facing in the form of metal leasing the latch! from either the notches I6 strip portions I2 which are preferably formed or I! the operator pushes the pin 22 upwardly as a part of a U-shaped sealing member whose and thus swings the latch I8 outwardly away 0 base is engaged by the strip or member II and from the member II which it has been noted also held in place by said strip which is secured to forms a part of the weather seal. the fixed frame by screws I3. It is to be noted E desire it to be understood that this inventhat strip portions I2 of the U-shaped sealing tion is not to be limited to any'particular armember I4 have the flat parts I5 and the parts rangement of parts except in so far as such limiinclining from said flat parts to the base of said tations are included in the claim. 55
What I claim as my invention is:
In a structure of the type described having a fixed window frame provided with latch engaging portions and a sliding sash having a mortise disposed intermediate thereof and a slot extending from said mortise to one side of said sash, the combination of a. gravity actuated latch cooperating with the latch engaging portions of said window frame and working in said mortise,
a pin mounted in said sash and on which said latch is pivotally mounted, an actuating member secured to said latch and projecting through said slot in said sash, and a metal plate secured to said sash and having a guide slot for said pin alined with said slot in said sash and a part projecting over said pivot pin to retain it in position.
