This invention has reference to door fastenings, particularly to a fastening device capable of acting as a door or window lock or as an .adjustable fastening as will be explained.
An object of the invention is to provide a device suitable for attachment to doors, hinged windows and the like capable of securely locking the same in closed position or acting as a guard lock whereby the door or window may be opened part way to permit communication or ventilation without danger of intrusion by outsiders.
Another object is to provide a device as noted, attachable to any door or window by simple means which is substantially invisible when in closed position.
A further object is to provide a device of the class described which is simple, rugged and of handsome appearance.
Other objects will appear in the following description and accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a side elevational view of my device as the same would appear when attached to a door frame and as viewed from the right, in Fig. 2, with certain portions broken away to permit clear view of underlying parts and a dotted outline showing the mechanism in operated position;
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view of the same showing a fragmented portion of a door which carries a portion of the device as will be described;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan or top view taken from line 3 3 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an elevational view taken from the side opposite that shown in Fig. 1 .as noted by arrows 5 4 in Fig. 2;

Fig. 6 is a fragmental perspective detail view showing a portion of the mechanism to be described.
Referring to thevdrawing, it is to be noted that my device consists generally of two co-operating mechanisms, one to be attached to a door jamb, the other to be ,attached to the door.
Figs. l and 2 disclose the assembly as comprising a mortised plate member III secured to a door jamb Iii-A by means of screws II.
In the mortised portion of plate I0, between the door jamb and plate is fitted a link member I2, the same having an arcuately fashioned slot I3 formed in its lower portion.
Slot I3 is so proportioned as to slidably receive a rivet I4 which is secured in plate I0 as best shown in Fig. 2, the edges of the slot being mortised to clear a portion of the head of the rivet as shown.
In the upper portion of plate I0 is a recess I5 so disposed as to receive an extending, similarly formed portion I 6 near and integral with the upper end of link I2. The upper edge of the link is provided with a recess Il adapted to receive the lower end of a bar member I8 which is slidably mounted within a mortise formed in the upper portion of plate I.
A recess I9, formed in the bar engages a tooth portion 2l] of a rocking member 2| pivotally supported in plate I0. A small nger member 2| extends beyond the edge of plate IIJ and provides means whereby member 2| may be manipulated to slide the bar I8 vertically to engage it in the recess Il, to securely lock the link in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 1, or to release it to permit movement of the link as shown in dotted lines.
A slotted opening 22 is disposed in link I2 as shown in the several views. A mortised area 23 surrounds the slot on the inner surface of the link.
Opposite the slot 22, secured in .an adjacent door or window -A as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is a bolt mechanism comprising a casing 24 within which is a sliding bolt member 25 provided with a rack portion 26.
Projecting through the body of the door and casing 24 is a pinion member 21 disposed as shown in Fig. 3 with the pinion in mesh with rack 26.
Secured to the extending end of the pinion is a knob 28 by means of which the pinion may be rotated to propel the bolt 25 outwardly to engage link I2 as indicated in Fig. 2 or to withdraw it into casing 24 out of co-operative position.
The pinion-knob unit is retained in proper position on the door by means of a surface plate 29 secured to the door by screws 30.
Fig. 6 illustrates that bolt 25 is provided, at its outer end, with an oblong head 3I connected to the body portion of bolt 25 by a neck portion 32.
Bearing in mind that slot 22 is so proportioned that the bolt head 3I and neck 32 are freely movable therein, it will be apparent that, with the several parts arranged as in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, knob 28 may be manipulated to insert or withdraw the bolt head from engagement with the link. If, with the bolt in inserted position, the bar I8 is moved into engagement in recess I1, as in Fig. 4, the door 24-A will be securely locked in closed position.
In case it is desired to unlock the door so that it may be opened to a limited extent while at the same time retaining an effective connection be- -tween the doo-r and jamb, the finger 2| may be manipulated to disengage bar I8 and thus render the link free to move into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in Fig. 3, wherein the door has been opened to the extent permitted by the link.
The movement described is made possible due to the sliding and pivotal movement of the link on rivet I4 and pivotal movement of the link on bolt 25.
With the Adoor in ajar position, separation of the link from the door is prevented by means of the lip portion of the head 3| of bolt 25 engaging behind the walls of slot 22 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l and in Fig. 3.
The latter locked relation is obviously brought about by the angular position of link I2 relative to the bolt head 3l.
Due to the changes in angular relation between the several parts mentioned, it is necessary that the parts have a certain amount of freedom of movement in substantially all directions, hence the mortised edges of slot I3 and a loose tting neck 32 and slot 22 are prolock the link as described and nally Withdraw the bolt 25 by the means described whereupon the link is held neatly assembled with plate I0 and there being no connection between the door and link the door may be opened and closed in the usual manner.
With the foregoing in mind, it will be apparent that a door or window fitted with my device may be securely locked in closed position, held ajar in locked relation or used in the conventional manner.
What I claim is:
A device of the class described including a plate member attachable to a door frame, a link member mounted for pivotal and longitudinal movement on said plate and disposed between the plate and door frame, a locking bar mounted for sliding movement on said plate above the said link, a recess in the upper end of the link adapted to receive said bar in locking relation to prevent pivotal movement of the link, a lug portion disposed on the side of said link and a recess in said plate adapted to receive Said lug portion in a manner to hold said link against longitudinal movement, and mechanism secured in the door movable to engage or disengage said link.
