DOOR OPERATING DEVICE Filed May 9} 1954 INVENTOR ATTOR N EY Patented Feb. 19 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOOR OPERATING DEVICE Paul Smith, Farmingdale, N. Y.
Application May 9, 1934, Serial No. 724,774
2 Claims.
This invention relates to door operating devices of the character set forth in my U. S. Letters Patent granted March 8, 1932 and numbered 1,848,978 and has for the primary object the provision of an improved means for automatically retaining the doors against movement when said doors occupy either closed or opened positions and which will release said doors when the latter are manually moved, consequently said doors will remain wind or air currents.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary interior view, partly in section, showing a garage or similar structure equipped with swinging doors with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a top plan view, partly in section,
illustrating the doors in a closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the doors in open position.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing the mounting of my invention to the building or garage and its connection with the doors.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a garage or like building, the entrance of which is closed by swinging doors 2. My invention is applied to the doors and tothe garage for the purpose of causing simultaneous opening and closing of the doors and for retaining the doors either in open or closed position against accidental movement.
A plate 3 is secured to the upper side of the door frame and carries a bracket 4. The bracket 4 cooperates with the plate 3 in supporting a pivot pin 5, the latter carrying a bell crank lever 6 which includes arm portions 7 and 8. The free end of the arm portion '7 is connected to one of the doors by a lever or link 9. Ordinary pivotal connections are employed between the lever 9 and the door and the bell crank lever. The arm portion 8 is provided with a series of openings 10, one of which receives a pivot pin 11 carried by one end of a link or lever 12 and the opposite end of the lever is pivotally connected to the other door of the garage. A stop pin 11' may be positioned in any one of the other openings 10 to be engaged by the link 12. The doors thus connected are caused to move in unison and by adopen when thus positioned and subjected to justing the stop pin 11 on the arm portion 8, the degree in which the doors open may be varied.
A bracket 13 is carried by the link 12 and extends angularly thereto and its free end has connected thereto a spring 14, the other end of which is connected to the arm portion 8 of the bell crank lever 6 by a pivot pin 15 fitting in any one of a series of openings 16. The connection of the spring 14 with the bell crank lever is between the pivots 5 and 11. The spring 14 acts on the bell crank lever to retain the doors either in open or closed position. It will be noted that the pivot 11 shifts its position from one side of the spring to the other side during the opening and closing of the doors.
A latch bolt 18 is carried by one of the doors to engage with the keeper of the door frame when the doors are in closed position and due to the connection between said doors by my invention the doors will be prevented from opening until the latch bolt is retracted from the keeper. It is to be understood that the latch bolt 18 is to be placed on the inside of the door and is connected to an arm 19 of a shaft 20 journaled to the door and carrying a door knob 21 located exteriorly of the garage. The means for operating the latch bolt may have in conjunction therewith a key actuated lock if desired. 1
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A door operatingdevice comprising a pivotally mounted bell crank lever, links pivoted to said bell crank lever and to a pair of swinging doors, a bracket carried by one of said links and extending angularly thereto, and spring means connected to the bracket and to the bell crank lever between its pivot and the pivot between said last-named link and the bell crank lever for retaining the doors in either open or closed position against accidental movement.
2. A door operating device comprising a pivotally mounted bell crank lever including arm portions, a link pivoted to one of said arm portions and to a swinging door, a second link pivotally connected to the other arm portion and pivoted to a second swinging door, a bracket carried by the second-named link and extending angularly thereto, a coiled spring connected tothe free end of the bracket and to the bell crank lever between its pivot and the pivot of the second-named lever to said bell crank lever for retaining the doors against accidental movement in either opened or closed position, and a stop ad-
