The invention relates to door latches, and
has for its object to'provide in combination with a hinged door latching device an arcuate member concentric with the hinging point of the door and having notcheswith which a slidable bar controlled by the'latch operating mechanism cooperates for holding the door in open positions. 7
A further object is to provide a bell crank lever connection mounted on the door, to one arm of which'the latching .bar is pivotally connected and a link connection between said" bell crank lever-and the pivoted latch, whereby upon raising said latch to open position, the slidable bar will be moved out of engagement with the notches of the arcuate member for allowing the door to be opened.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the door which is hingedly mounted at 2 within a door frame 3. Secured to opposite sides of the door 1 adjacent its free end by means of rivets & are plates 5 in a sleeve 6 of one of which plates is rotatably mounted a shaft 7, which shaft has its ends providedwith handle members 8 on opposite sides of the door whereby the mechanism hereinafter set forth, may be controlled from either side of the door. Shaft 7 is provided with a latching arm 9, which latching arm pivotally moved in a vertical plane and is adapted to engage over the keeper 10 for holding the door 1 in closed position. Pivotally connected at 11 to the outer side of the door is a bell crank lever 12, to the arm 13 of which is pivotally j in turn pivotally connected at 16 to the latchv connected at 1 1 a link 15, and which link is ing arm 9, therefore it will be seen that when the operator rotates the shaft 7 for raising v the latching arm,9,'the link 15 will rock the bell crank lever-12 on its pivotal point thereby movmg the arm 17 of the bell crank lever downwardly and imparting a pull-downwardly on the vertically slidable bar 18, which bar is pivotally connected at 19 to the.

whichisconnected at 24 to the frame. of the door and the ends 'of'the arcuate member are connected at 25 to the frame, therefore it will be seen that the arcuate member is thoroughly braced at all times.
Disposed withina chamber 26.of th e door 1 and connected at 27 to a post carried by the slidable bar 18 is a coiled spring 19, which cooperates with the slidable bar and a fixed support for normally forcing the slidable bar 18 upwardlyland against thecontractible force of which the operator moves the mocha-- nism hereinbefore set forth during an unlatching operation.-
' From the above it will be seen that a com bined door latching and door holding mecha-' nism is provided which will positivelyhold the door in closed position at all times, and
will also hold the door in various'opened positions, thereby preventing slamming ofthe door and obviating the use of conventional forms of door stops as at present in use.
