This invention.relates to improvements in latches, the general object of the invention being to provide simple means for holding a door, gate or the like in closed position, the movable part beingformed of a simple lever provided with a handle at one end and a beveled head at theother end for engaging a keeper, the handleacting as a weight for holding the head in engagement with the keeper. 1 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking member for holding the latch lever in latching position, withineans for moving the locking member from either side of the barrier.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation, showing the invention in use on a door.
Figure 1 is a similar view but showing a slight modification.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the door and latch shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the latch shown in Figure 1 Figure 5 is a sectional view through the form shown in Figure 4. e
Figure 6 is a view of the locking member.
In these views, 1 indicates the latching lever which is adapted to pass through an opening formed in the door and in the face plates 2 which are connected with the door or other barrier, the lever being pivoted intermediate its ends-within the opening by the pin 3. This part of the lever is of fiat construction and its extremity is provided with a beveled head 4 which forms anotch 5 for receiving the keeper pin 6. The other end of the lever is enlarged and rounded to form a handle 7 which extends downwardly from the flat part. This handle acts as a weight to throw the head part upwardly to engage the pin after the head part has been moved downwardly by its beveled edge striking the pin. Thus the latch will automatically operate tolatch the door when the door 1s swung shut. The head 4 is provided with a horizontal wing i which acts as a linger plec-e for permitt-ingthe latch lever to be moved to inactive position by a person on the latching side of the door, the handle belng used on the opposite side of the door.
I also provide a locking member for holding the latch lever in latching position, and this member comprises a bar 8 which has a latching arm 9 thereon provided with a recess 10 for engaginga part of the latch lever and with a second arm 11 which extends outwardly from the bar to form a finger piece for permitting thebar to be adjusted to looking or unlocking position. The bar is attached to a shaft 12 which is rotatably supported in the door and has a crank handle 13 on its end which is opposite from that to which the bar 8' is secured. A coil spring 14 is arranged on the shaft between the bar 8 and a collar 15 on the shaft for frictionally holding the bar against one of the face plates so that the locking device will be frictionally held in its adjusted position.
Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the locking member arranged to engage the upper edge of the latch lever on that side of the door on which the handle 7 is located, while Figures 1, a and 5 show the locking lever arranged on the opposite side of the door and designed 'to engage the under edge of the lever adja cent its head 4.
From the foregoing,
pin 6 as soon as the door is swung shut, and said lever can be moved into unlatching position by either tilting it by means of the handle 7 on one side of the door or by means 3f the wing l on the opposite side of the oor. while in latching position through means of the locking member by turning such member either by means of the crank handle 13 on one side of the door or the arm 11 on the 1 It can also be held against movement I it will be seen that the'latch lever will automatically engage the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A latching device, comprising a lever pivoted in an opening in the barrier and having a latching head at one end for engaging a keeper, a handle at its opposite end which acts as a Weight to hold the lever in latching position, said head having a hori- 10 zontal Wing forming a finger piece, a lockmg member for the lever comprislng a bar having a finger part thereon and an arm having a'notch for engaging a part ofthe lever and a handle member passing through 5
