UNITE STATES ATENT Price.
CARRIE G. GRIFFIN, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS.
COMBINED DOOR CHECK AND BUFFER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OARRIEG. GRIFFIN, of Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Combined Door Holder and Buffer,
of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved door-holder, which can also be used as a buffer or bumper.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved door holder, showing the manner in which it holds the door. Fig. 2 is a plan 'view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the bumper on the wall, showing it so adjusted as not to hold the door. Fig. 4. is a face view of the said bumper, and Fig. 5shows a modification of the latch in the bumper.
On that surface of the door A that faces the wall when the door is open a button or bumper, B, is secured, which is provided in its top with a slot, 0, which coincides with a vertical slot, 0, in the door. In the said slot a latch-lever, D, is arranged, which is pivoted on the door and is provided on the end projecting beyondthe button with a hook, D, and at the opposite end with a finger-plate, D.
A button or bumper, E, is secured on the wall in a position corresponding to that of the button 13, and is provided with a vertical slot, E, in which a tumbler, F, having one rounded or beveled edge, is pivoted at or near the middle of the bottom of the slit. The buttons or bumpers can have any desired shape, but are preferably made semi-spherical, and are made of rubber, metal, wood, or of two or several of these materials combined.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 a hookplate, H, is arranged on the bottoniof the slit E in the bumper, and above the said hookplate a latch, J, is pivoted.
The operation is as follows: If the door is to be held when open, the tumbler F is swung down so as to leave a clear space between its PECIFICATION .orming part of Letters Patent No. 321,964, dated July 14, 1835.
Application filed July 15. 1884.
(Modem inner end and the wall. When the door is opened, the hook D of the latch lever D strikes the beveled edge of the tumbler, slides up the same, and then catches on the inner or butt end of the tumbler, as shown in Fig. 1, thus holding the door open.
To release or disengage the door, the fingerplate D is pressed down, and thereby the hook D of the latch is raised.
It the device is not to hold the door open, the tumbler is swung up and toward the rear, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the hook D of the latch-lever cannot catch on the tumbler. Inthis case the device acts asa bumper or buffer onlv.
\Vhen the modified bumper in Fig. 5 is used, the latch Jinust be swung up if the hook D on the latch D is to catch and hold the door open. When it is desired that the latch shall not catch on the bumper and shall not hold the door open, the latch J must be swung down, as shown in dotted lines, so as to cause the hook D on the lever D to slide up the same and prevent it from catching.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure. by Let ters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a door check, with the pivoted hook, of a bumper provided with a pivoted latch or tumbler for engaging said hook, said tumbler being adapted to be turned in one direction to engage said hook and to allow said hook to pass when turned in the opposite direction, whereby, when attached to a door and wall, said door-check may be used as an ordinary bumper or a positive means of holding the door open, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a bumper having a slit, of a tumbler pivoted in the slit at or near the middle of the bottom of the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a door having a vertical slot, of a slitted bumper secured on the door, and a latch arranged in the slot in the door and the slit in the bumper, substantially as, herein shown and described.
