N. PETERS Pmm-Lnro m hm Wnhin mn, D, C.
UNITED STATES TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS J. ANDRESS, OF SAME PLACE.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,209, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed February .10, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Bolts, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a partial longitudinal section and partial side elevation of a shutter-bolt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a front end view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section in line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a top view of the bolt and appurtenances on a reduced scale, the same being applied in position, the shutter being in horizontal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a bolt adapted for reliably locking and conveniently bowing shutters and holding the same in open position, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the barrel or keeper of a shutter-bolt, and B represents an additional keeper formed therewith or secured thereto at the forward end thereof, whereby when each shutter is provided with a bolt the bolt of one shutter enters the keeper on the barrel of the bolt on the other shutter.
0 represents an arm or handle which is connected with the tail end of the bolt and adapted to move in a slotted guide, D, which is formed with orsecured to the back plate of the barrel or keeper A, or may be separate therefrom.
A portion of the guide is recessed, as at E, so that the handle 0 may be turned thereinto, and the wall of said recess on the side toward the front of the bolt is shouldered, as at F, so that said handle may engage therewith. The end of the handle has an eye, G, which is adapted to be connected with either of the series of pins H, which are secured to the window-sill or to an arm attached to said sill.
The operation is as follows: W'hen the bolt is shot out to full extent, it enters the opposite keeper, and the handle 0 is then connected with the first of the pins H, whereby the bolt is securely held and locked. By releasing the handle and drawing back the bolt to full extent the shutter is unlocked and the bolt is then turned by means of the handle, so that the latter enters the recess E. The bolt is then moved slightly forward and the handle engages with the shoulder F, whereby the bolt is held in unlocked position.
In orderto bow the shutter the bolt is 0perated so that the handle leaves the shoulder and recess and enters the slot of the guide D. The shutter may now be pushed out by the handle, the bolt entering the guide D, and said handle is connected with either of the pins 2, 3, 4, or more, if employed, relatively to the extent that it is desired to how the shutter, thus holding the same bowed. When the shutter is opened to full extent, the bolt is turned by the handle, so that the latter is moved from its outwardly-projecting position toward the window-sill, and the eye of the handle is fitted in the end pin, H, thus securing the shutter as fully opened.
The bolt is shown pressed by a spring within the barrel A for forcing the same outwardly; but I do not limit myself thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sliding and rotary bolt provided with a handle, and the keeper or barrel thereof, in combination with a slotted guide, and pins which are connected with the under sill and adapted to have the handle of the bolt connected with either of the same for holding the bolt in locked, bowed, and open positions, as stated.
2. A bolt with a handle, and a barrel or keeper for said bolt, in combination with aslot ted guide formed with a recess and shoulder, and pins with which said handle engages in the locked, bowed, and open positions of a shutter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY.
