-e www H www@ i E W W i n v Al/amey Nirnn Srnrns JOI-IN BOOTHLWIAN, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO WILLIAM B. WOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,546, dated March 29, 1898.
Application led February 16, 1897. Renewed February l1, 1898. Serial No. 669,977. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BOOTHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bed- -Fasteners and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for holding blinds and shutters open or closed; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device readily attached to shutters now in use and which will serve to effectually hold the shutter in either its open or closed position and yet readily operated to open the shutter when closed, or Vice versa.
The device is not uncomely in its appearance, and as it can be manufactured at a trifiing cost it will be brought within the reach of all.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined bythe appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing one shutter open and the other closed. Fig. 2 is a detail on an enlarged scale, showing the parts which are attached to the shutter. Fig. 3 is a section through the pivot of the swiveled arm.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the different views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of the window-frame, and B the shutter or blind, hung to swing in the usualmanner.
On the inner face of the shutter or blind, near the lower edge thereof, is secured the plate C, the outer vertical edge of which is provided with the right-angled portion D, which is provided with a vertical slot E, open at its upper end, while on this right-angled 4 over the pins M.
II is the locking-arm. j Itis slightlycurved l near its outer end to enable it to the better be engaged in t-he said slot, and its inner end is bent to go around a pivot-pin and forman eye, which works upon the said pin as upon a, pivot. I', which project outward from the plate J, which is mounted to swivel on the plate C, as shown. It will thus be seen that the lockingarm has a movement as upon a pivot and also upon a swivel, in order that it may assume the different positions necessary to perform its proper functions. This locking-arm is provided near its outer end with a hole K, for a purpose which will soon appear.
M are pins on the window-sill, over which the holes in the locking-arms engage to hold the shutters in their closed position.
L are hooked arms secured on the outside of the building and which are designed to be engaged by the locking-arms to hold the shutters open.
The operation will be apparent. The shutters are locked after being closed by simply engaging the openings in the locking-arms When opening the shutters, the arms are disengaged from the said pins and placed in the slots of the right-angled portions of the plates C, Where they will be held bythe latches, and when the shutteris thrown open against the wall of the building the locking-arms are engaged by the hooked arms or latches L and the shutter locked.
It will also be noted that by myconstruction the shutter cannot be yopened from the outside.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or. sacrificing any ofV its advantages.
What is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with the 4plate having a right-angled portion with vertical slot open at its upper end, of a locking-arm mounted on This pin I is held in the ears or lugs IOO said plate for pivotal movement, and a swiveled plate carrying the pivot on which the looking-arm Works, as set forth.
2. The Combination With the plate having a right-angled portion with open-ended slot, and a latch, of the looking-arm mounted on said plate for pivotal and swivel movements, as set forth.
3. The combination With a shutter, of a plate secured thereto and provided With a right-angled portion with open-ended slot, and a latch parallel therewith, a plate swiveled on said plate and having ears, a pinrheld in said ears, and a looking-arm mounted on said pin and provided with a curved portion and a hole, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN BOOTHMAN.
