INVENTOFN? Albefifi Wight aessasf v JbhnHLedfy-mfi & 5% BY fi ATTORNEY ALBERT C. WEIGHT AND J OHN LEARY, JR., OF COLOBIADO.
GATE-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1918.
Application filed March 29, 1917. Serial 30.158363.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT C. YVnieirr and JOHN H. LEARY, Jr, citizens of the United States, residing at "Westcl-iife, in the county of Custer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Gate-Latches, ofwhieh the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gate latch and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which can be operated without effort as long as the gate will swing on its hinges, as the sag of the gate will not interfere with its operation.
Another object of the invention is to make the latch operative from both sides of the gate and which will permit the gate to swing in either direction.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide spring means for retarding the movement of the movable member of the latch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation, and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a view showing the invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the movable part of the latch.
Fig. 3 is a like view of the stationary part.
In these drawings, 1 represents the gate and 2 the gate post, while 8 indicates the stationary or striking member of the latch, which is secured to the gate by means of the screws 4. This member of the latch consists of a flat plate having the screw holes therein and provided with a right-angular projection 5 against which the movable part of the latch engages to hold the gate closed. The movable member 6 of the latch is pivoted in ears 7 carried by a plate 8 secured to the post by screws 9, said ears ,extendi ngha t right angles from the plate 8. A i
The movable member 6 is of ,rectangular form and midway of its ends is provided- With projections 9 ;1 0 which pass through holes formed in the ears. The promoving the member 6 for opening the gate.
The striking member shown in Fig. 1 consists of a rod projecting up from the plate 3 while that shown in Fig. 3 consists of a plate-like member 5 of substantially the same width as the member 3.
When it is desired to use the latch on large gates, we prefer to form the member 6 of considerable length, so as to allow more room for the gate to sag. It is thought the operation of the device will be clear from an inspection of the drawings.
By moving the member 6 from one side or the other, the gate can be opened, as the projection 5 will pass said member when it is swung to either one side or the other from the position shown in Fig. 1. Then, when the gate swings shut, the member 5 striking the member 6 will automatically swing the same back into normal position and thus lock the gate.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understood that we may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim as our invention 1. A gate latch comprising a frame member having projections thereon by which it is pivotally mounted, one of said projections being provided with a squared portion, a second member having a projecting part adapted to engage the frame member, and a spring having its arms contacting with opposite faces of the squared portion of said projections for normally holding the frame member in a locked position.
2. A gate latch comprising a frame member having projections thereon by Which it is pivotally mounted upon the post, a second member having a projecting part adapted to engage With the frame member, and a spring engaging one of the projections on the frame member for normally holding said member in a locked position.
3. A gate latch comprising a plate having projecting ears thereon, a frame member having projections thereon for pivotally mounting the frame in the projected ears,
one of said projections being provided with a squared portion, a second member having a projecting part for contacting with the frame member, and a spring secured to said plate and having its arms contacting With opposite faces of the squared portion of said projection, for normally holding the frame member in a locked postion.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses.
