FERDINAND ZIGrANEK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DETROIT ROLLER LATCH C0., OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE STRIKE-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed December 4, 1915. Serial No. 65,124.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND ZIGANEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Strike- Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved adjustable strike plate or keeper for door latches and has for its primary object to provide a latch keeper including a fixed body member secured upon the door jamb or frame and a yieldably projected strike plate slidably mounted in said body member.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved mounting for the movable strike plate whereby its normal position with respect to the body member may be varied and the tension of the projecting spring adjusted or regulated.
It is an additional general object of the invention to improve and simplify devices of the above character, increase their durability and eliiciency in practical operation and enable the same to be produced at rela-- tively small manufacturing cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of Vparts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a latch keeper showing the same in applied position; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device, the strike plate being shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the keeper.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a section of a swinging door and 6 the frame or jamb thereof which is opposed t0 the free edge of the door when the latter is closed.
On one side of the door, the latch device is mounted. This device vas illustrated is substantially identical with that shown in Patent No. 1,111,426, issued September 22, 1914, to Ferdinand Ziganek and Frank W. Wilkinson and includes a spring-projected, longitudinally slidable latch roller 7 mounted to rotate freely upon a vertical axis 8,
said roller projecting outwardly from the open end of the latch casing indicated at 9.
Upon the corresponding side of the door post or frame 6, the improved keeper which constitutes the particular subject-matter of the present application, isv secured. This keeper includes a body member 1() of substantially rectangular U-shaped form in cross-section. One end of this U-shaped body member is closed and the wall thereof extended beyond the corresponding walls of said member to provide attaching anges 11, whereby the body member may be conveniently secured. to the post or jamb 6. This end wall of said body member is also formed with a raised rectangular boss 12 which is centrally provided with an opening to loosely receive the threaded end of a bolt 13. One side of the U-shaped member 10 at the edge of the door post or jamb 6 is open and the opposed walls of said member at this open side thereof are inwardly ianged toward each other, as at 14.
15 designates the movable strike plate which is also of U-shaped form and closed at one end by the wall 16. This end wall is provided with a countersink indicated at 17, to receive the flared head 18 on the end of the bolt 13. The U-shaped strike plate is of such dimensions as to fit snugly within the U-shaped body member 10 and the open side of this U-shaped plate coincides with the open side of the body member 10, the edges of the opposed walls of the strike plate having sliding engagement upon the inner faces of the flanges 14 on the walls of said bodv member.
A coil spring 1.9 is arranged around the bolt 13 and has one of its ends seated upon the boss 12 while the other end of said spring bears against the end wall 15 of the strike plate. This wall at the open side of the U-shaped strike plate is preferably formed with a convex or rounded rib 20 against which the latch roller 7 is adapted to engage or strike when the door is swung to its open or closed position. A nut 21 is threaded upon the inner end of the bolt 13 and is normally engaged within the rectangular hollow boss 12 of the body mem- In the the body member and regulate the tension of the spring 19, by applying a screw driver to the head 18 on the end of the bolt and turning the same, said bolt will be threaded throughv the nuty 21.
practical operation of the device, it will be readily understood that when the door 5 is swung from an open to a closed position, the latch roller 7 will strike the beaded edge 20 of the strike plate and force the plate inwardly against the action of the spring 19, said latch roller also being forced inwardly into the latch case 9. When the door is disposed in its fully closed position, the latch roller will be projected outwardly and into the open sides of the body member 10 and the strike plate 15, said plate being returned to its normal position by the expansion of the spring 19. It will thus be apparent that I have provided a very simple and effective keeper device wherein the movable strike plate can be readily adjusted so that 'thel latch roller will properly engage therein rwhen the door is swung to its closed position.
The device as a whole is exceedingly simple in its construction, as welll as strong and durable in practical use.
The latch keeper may be constructed in various sizes and readily applied to barn doors or other structures upon which such a latch might be advantageously employed.
The invention is also susceptible of a great many other modifications in the form, proportion and arrangement of the several parts and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
npi'el of this patent may he obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is l. A latch keeper including a fixed body member, a strike plate slidably mounted upon said body member, a coil spring normally urging the strike plate in one direction, and means for adjusting the normal position of said strike plate with respect to the body member.
2. A latch keeper including a fixed U- shaped body member, a U -shaped strike plate slidable in said body member and open upon one side to receive the latch element, a coil spring housed within said body member and strike plate and normally urging the latter in one direction, and means for adjusting the normal position of saidstrike plate with respect to the body member.
3. A latch keeper including a U-shaped body member, a U-shaped strike plate slidably engaged within said body member, said strike plate and body member being open upon corresponding sides to receive the latch element, a bolt connected at one of its ends to the strike plate and movable at its other end through one wall of the body member, said wall of the body member being formed with a nut receiving recess, a nut on the bolt normally engaged in said recess, and a coil spring arranged upon said bolt and acting against the strike plate to project the same in one direction.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
