MECHANISM FOR OPERATING SHUTTER-S.
Application filed March 10, 1922. Serial No. 542,523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. HUssEn, a citizen of Italy, and a resident of Torrington, county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Mechanism for Operating Shutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for manipulating window blinds and more particularly to devices operable on the blinds outside of a building and controlled by means located within the building, without the necessity of opening and closing the window.
One object is to provide a simple and practical devic: of the above general character which ,may be inexpensively manufactured, assembled and installed, and will be very reliable and eflicient in use.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above cha 'acter by means of which the blinds may be opened to any desired degree and may be held firmly in any desired position.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which may be applied to blinds now installed, andwhich will present a neat and attractive appearance both on the inside and outside of the building.
Further objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawing and in part in- (heated in connection herewith by the following analysis of this invention.
This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts, the unique relation of the parts and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined heroin,
To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof, that they may embody the same by numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as an illustrated embodiment as part of this disclosure, and in such drawings like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective elevational view of a portion of a building provided with blinds and having the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig, 1.
Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail perspective views of the various parts of the mechanism, certain parts being broken away or shown in section to more clearly illustrate the construction and method of assembly.
Referring now to these drawings in detail, and more particularly to Fig. 1, 5 denotes I the window frame provided with the usual sliding sashes 6, and a pair of blinds 7 hinged at 8, all in the usual manner.
Tl1:se blinds 7 are provided on their outer surfaces when in closed position, with guide brackets 10, shown, in detail in Fig. 5. These brackets are adapted to be engaged by and co-act with a roller 11, Fig. 4-, mounted on the upturned end 12 of a swinging arm 13, The opposite end of the swinging arm 13 is also turned upwardly and is provided with a bearing collar 14- and a bevel gear 15 rigidly mounted thereon. so that when the gear 15 is rotated the arm 13 will swing in the manner indicated by the inner dotted line in Fig. 2, the outer dotted lines indicating the path of the outer edge of the blind 7. The bevel gear 15 and the bearing collar 14: are preferably mounted withina housing 16 provided with a base plate 17 having fastening holes 18, 18, by means of which it may be secured by screws or other suitable means to a plate 20 having cooperating fastening holes 21 and mounted in the window frame; This base plate 20 is provided with an enlarged collar 22 through which passes an operating shaft 23 having a bearing collar 24: and a bevel gear 25 at its outer end. the latter being adapted to mesh with the bevel gear 7 15, as clearly shown in Fig, 2.
(in the inner side of the window frame, the operating shaft 23 is provided with. a plate or disk 26 having a plurality of notches or lugs 30 forming one part of an intermeshing locking device. The other part of the intermeshing locking device comprises a sleeve 31 provided with co-acting locking teeth 32, said sleeve being slidably mounted upon a squared portion 33 of the operating shaft 23. A spring 34 is housed within a hollow operating knob 35 and acts between the sleeve .31 and an end nut 36. Thus, when the knob is pulled outwardly away from the window frame, the spring 34 is compressed simultaneously with the releasing of the intermeshing locking device and by reason of the squared portion 33 and the fastening means 37 securing the knob to thesleeve 31 the shaft 23 may be rotated to turn-the gears 25 and 15, thereby to cause aswinging of the arm 18. The parts turn in the direction of the arrow When it is desired to open the blinds.
From the above description, it is believed that the construction, method of use, 'and operation will be clear to those skilled in the art to which this invention belongs. Attentionv is called to the fact that when the blind; has been opened only. part way, the knob 35 may be released, and the spring 34 will then operate'to' press against the sleeve 31, and thus hold the blind in any intermediate adjusted position. Moreover, by locating the major part. of the mechanism either within the house or concealed within the housing 16, the mechanism will be protected from rain and snow and consequently will not rust.
From the above it will be seen that the present invention provides a simple, practical, and inexpensive device well adapted to accomplish, among others, all of the objects and advantages herein set forth.
It is understood that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing: from the spirit of the invention, and the invention, therefore, is' not to be limited to the specific form herein shown and de scribed. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the-scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a swinging shutter for awindow structure, of a device for manipulating said shutter through the wall of a building, said device comprising a guiding member on said shutter, a housing, a swinging arm having, its ends upturned, one of said upturned ends being. engaged in said guiding member and the other upturned end being located within said housing and having a gear secured thereto, an operating shaft-passing through. said wall, the outer end of said shaft having a gear adapted to mesh with the gear on said swinging arm, the inner end of said shaft having an intermediate squared section and a threaded extremity, an adjustable stop screwed on said threaded extremity, a sta tionary notched disk surrounding said shaft, and a sleeve slidable on the squared section of said shaft, said sleeve having notches adapted to mesh with the notches on said disk to lock the shaft in any desired adjusted position, and a spring located: between said sleeve and said stop to hold said sleeve in locked position.
