Be it known that I, OLIVER H. ORENDORFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to latches for doors and the like and has for its object the provision of a novel latch peculiarly adapted for use on the doors of automobiles and the like though susceptible of use at different places if desired, an important feature being the provision of means embodied in the latch whereby it will automatically swing the door slightly open when the operating handle is turned.
Another object is the provision of a latch of this character in which the spring pressure which operates to swing the door open when the handle is turned will also act to prevent rattling of the door when closed and take up any wear which may occur from time to time after continued use.
An additional object is the provision of a latch of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture and install, elficient and durable in use and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

the usual manner. The frame is equipped with a keeper 10 located at the edge thereof for co-operation with the latch device to be described. 7
This latch comprises a rectangular casing 11 formed of two sections 12 and 13 which are detachably connected, and this casing is preferably recessed into the door thoughof course if desired it might be mounted on the inside thereof, this being a matter of choice. T he sections of the casing are held together and the casing is held in the door or upon the door by means of suitable screws 14. One edge of the section 13 is rolled as indicated to provide knuckles 15 through which passes a pintle 16 on which is mounted a latch 17 which cooperates with the keeper 10. This latch projects into the casing and the inner end is formed with a flattened relatively thin extension 18 having a slot 19 therein. Riveted or otherwise secured in the casing is a leaf spring 20 which has its free end engaging within the slot 19 for holding the latch in engagement with its keeper and forcing the door open when the releasing means to be described is actuated.
The opposite sides of the sections 12 and 13 are formed with circular holes within which are journaled the cylindrical ends 21 of abarrel 22 which is formed angular intermediate its ends as indicated at 23. The barrel is formed with a square bore 24 through which passes the operating spindle 25 which is journaled through the door and which is equipped at both ends with operating handles 26.
Pivoted upon one of the screws 14 is an arm 27 having one end cut away as shown at 28 to define a reduced portion 29, and provided intermediate its ends with a notch 30. The reduced portion 29 is designed to be engaged beneath the extension 18 for holding the latch rigid in its operative position so that the door cannot open. The notch 30 in this movable arm is engageable by the angular portion 23 of the barrel so that when the spindle 25 is turned the arm will be swung out of engagement with the extension 18 so that the latch will be released. Located in the path of movement of the free end of the arm is a leaf spring 81 which acts to hold the arm normally in its latch engaging position so that the door will not accidently become opened.
In Figure 4 I have shown the latch as in its inoperative position and it will be observed that the latch 17 then extends at an angle to the door so as to clear the keeper. hen the door is shut and the spindle turned or permitted to turn under the influence of the spring 31, the arm 27 will he in such position that its reduced portion 29 will reengage the extension 18 and hold the latch rigid and in engagement with the keeper. To effect the opening it is merely necessary to turn either handle 26 to a slight extent so as to move the arm 27 out of engagement with the extension 18 and permitthe spring 20 to swing the latch to its angular or released position.
From the foregoing description and a stuc y of the drawings it will be apparent that I have vthus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive latch for doors of any kind though it is preferably adapted for use on automobile doors for the reason that it may be embedded or recessed into the door and be consequently invisible and therefore neat and attractive.
While I have shown and'described the 7 preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

1. A latclrdevice for a hingedly mounted door comprising a keeper mounted on the door frame, a casing carried by the door, a spindle rotatably mounted through the door and through said casing, a latch pivoted at one edge of the casing and cooperating with said keeper, a spring within the casing engaging the latch for urging it into an inclined position to clear the keeper, an arm pivoted within the casing and normally engaging the latch for holding it against movement toinclined position, a barrel on the spindle for moving said arm, and a spring within the casing in the path of movement of said arm for opposing movement thereof to its latch disengaging posi tion.
2. A latch for a hingedly mounted door comprising a keeper mounted on the door frame, a casing carried by the door, a latch. pivoted upon the edge of the casing toward the free end of the door, a flattened extension on said latch, a spring within the casing engaging beneath said flattened extension for normally urging the latch into inclined position clearing the keeper, an arm pivoted within the casing and movable to engage over said flattened extension for holding the latch extended, and means for moving the arm, including a spindle journaled through the door and casing and carrying handles, and a barrel rigidly secured on the spindle and having an angular portion engageable with the arm for moving the same.
3. A latch for a hingedly mounted door comprising a keeper mounted on the door frame, a casing carried by the door, a latch pivoted upon the edge of the casing toward the free end of the door, a flattened extension on said latch, a spring within the easing engaging beneath said flattened extension for normally urging the latch into inclined position clearing the keeper, an arm pivoted within the casing and movable to engage over said flattened extension for holding the latch extended, and means for moving the arm, including a spindle journaled through the door and casing and carrying handles, and a barrel rigidly secured on the spindle and having an angular portion engageable with the arm for moving the same, a second spring within the casing in the path of travel of the arm for opposing movement thereof to its releasing position.
