This invention relates generally to door locks and latches particularly designed for use upon the doors of vehicle bodies and con sists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements ofparts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 is a case plate, 2 is a locking bolt, and 3 is a bolt shank of a latch embodying my invention. As shown, the case plate 1 is provided at its forward edgewith a laterally extending flange 4: having a suitable'opening 5 that receives the bolt 2, while the latter is preferably formed separate from the bolt shank 3 and is pivotally mounted on a pin 6 anchored in'parallel flanges '7 projecting inwardly from the upper and lower edges of the opening 5.
As usual, the shank 3 is slidably mounted on the case plate 1 and is provided at its forward end with a lateral flange or extension 8 for retracting the bolt. Heretofore such shanks were operatively connected to the piv oted bolts by separate pins that were anchored in the bolts in rear of the shank extensions so as to be engaged thereby for retracting the bolts. In the present instance, however such pins have been dispensed with entirely. As shown, the side wings 9 of the bolt have inturned tongues 10 that are adapted to be engaged by the lateral extension 8 of the shank to retract the bolt. Any suitable means such as the helical spring 11 may be used to normally hold the shank 3 in its forward position, while any suitable means such as the coil spring 12 may be used to normally hold the bolt 2 in projected position- As shown, the helical spring 11 is anchored on the case plate 1 and has an upstanding-arm 13 that engages a wall of a suitable, recess 14: inthe shank 3, while the coil spring 12 is sleeved upon the pin 6 and has the forward and rearward arms 15 and 16 respectively that bear against the bolt 2 and case plate 1.
For retracting the bolt I have provided a rollback 18 and a vertical spindle 19. As shown, the rollback 18 has a hub 20 journailed in the case plate 1 adjacent to the lateral flange 4 and has an upstanding arm 21 that is engageable with an upstanding arm or projection 22 on the shank 3, while the spindle 19 is preferably mounted for rotary and rectilinear movement between the case plate 1 and cover plate 1 and is provided intermediate its ends with the crank portion 26 that is engageable with a lateral lug or projection 27 at the rear end of the shank 3. As shown, the case plate 1 is provided with the vertically spaced arcuate embossed portions 24 and 25 respectively and the cover plate 1 is provided with the vertically spaced arcuate embossed portions 24. and 25. hen the parts are assembled as shown in Figure 1, the embossed portions 24 and 25 register with the respective embossed portions 2 1 and 25 and thereby form bearings A and B respec- 7 tively in which the spindle is adapted to rotate or slide longitudinally. Any suitable means (not shown) may be engaged with the hub 20 of the rollback for actuating the latter from the outside of the door, while a suitable handle (not shown) may be connected to the upper end of the spindle 19 to actuate the same from the inside of the door. Preferably a coil spring 28 is used to normally retain the crank portion 26 of the spindle in operative position. This spring also effectively prevents the spindle from rattling.
In order that the outside bolt retracting means may be rendered inoperative from the inside of the door, I have provided a suitable dog 29 that is pivoted on the case plate 1 between the spindle 19 and rollback 21 so as to be actuated by the former to prevent bolt retracting movement of the latter. As shown, this dog 29 is adapted to swing downwardly into the path of the rollback and is provided at its rear end with a rearwardly extending lug or projection 30. As shown, the forward slot 32 receives the lug on the dog 29, while the rear slot 33 receives a ring 34 anchored on the spindle 19. Thus the rocker 31 may be actuated by a rectilinear movement of the spindle 19 to swing the dog 29 about its pivot to operative or inoperative positions.
In use, the dog 29 is normally in raised inoperative position and the bolt 2 may be retracted by either swinging the rollback arm 21 rearwardly against the shank projection 22 or by swinging the crank portion 26 of the spindle rearwardly against the lug 27 on the shank. \Vhen it is desired to render the rollback inoperative, the spindle 19 may be pressed downwardly in the vertically spaced bearings A and B so that the ring 34 will cause the rocker 31 to lower the forward'end of the dog 29 into the path of the rollback arm 21. hen in this position, the rollback may be released by lifting the spindle 19 in the vertically spaced bearings A and B so cause the rocker 31 to raise the forward end of thedog E29 outof the path of the rollback arm 21. Thus the dog 29 may be controlled and rendered effective or ineffective by the manipulation of the inside bolt'retracting means. The ring 3% is always free to turn in the slot 33 in the rocker and in slot in case plate 1, hence'the spindle 19 may be used to retract the bolt when in either raised or lowered positions.
If desired, a leaf spring 35 may beused to yieldably retain the spindle 19 in raised position. As shown the uaaer end of this s Jrin on is ri idl secured to the back of the 'caseplate 1, while the lower end is provided with a lateral lug or projection 36 that is engageable with a suitable groove 37 in the spindle 19.
IVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of my invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted 'to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1, In a lock, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement, ano means for dogging the firstmember including an element engageable with the and actuating means for said element including a rocker having a slottet connection with said element, and a part carsecond mentioned retracting member engageable with said rocker.
2. In a lock, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement, means for retaining the first member inoping member mounted for rectilinear and romember mounted for rectilinear dog including a erative including a pivoted dog engageable with the first member and having an extension in rear of its pivot, and means for actuating said dog including a separate member operatively connected to the second bolt retracting member and engageable with said extension.
3. In alatch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement, and i'neansfor'dogging the first member including a pivotally mounted element engageable with the first member and having an extension, a ring secured to the second bolt retracting member, and a rocker having slots respectively receiving said extension and ring.
4. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracttary movement, and means for rendering the first memberinoperative including a dog engageable with the first member, a ring anchored on the secondmember, and a rocker terminally connected to said dog and ring.
'5. Ina latch,the combination with a bolt retracting member of a second bolt'retracting and rotary movement, and means for rendering the first member inoperative including a pivotally mounted dog engageable with the first memher and having a projection in rear of its pivot, a ring anchored on the second member, and a rocker having a slotted connection withsaid projection and ring.
6. In combination, a pivotally -mounted hollow latch having substantially parallel side wings provided with inturned projections, and a slidably mounted shank extend ing into said hollow latch and having a lateral extension engageable with the inturned projectionsof said side wings to actuate the bolt 7 Ina latch, the combination with a case plate,'and a bolt retracting member carried thereby, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement on said case plate, a dog pivoted on the case plate for rendering the first mentioned member inoperative, and actuating means for the part pivoted on the case plate between said dog and second mentioned memher and operable by a rectilinear movement of the latter.
8. In a latch, the combination with a case plate, and bolt retracting members spaced longitudinally thereof, and a dog pivoted on the caseplate for rendering one of said members inoperative, of actuating means for the dog including an element carried'by the other of said members, and a pivotally mounted part having slotted connections with both said dog and element.
9. In a latch, the combination with a" pair ofbolt retractingmembers, means for renderl ing one of said members inoperative including a dog movable into the path of said member, an element carried h the other of said members, and an interme iate element terminally connected to the dog and element aforesaid, the last mentioned element being mounted intermediate its ends for pivotal move ment.
