i To all who'v rtt't may come-mi vented certain new and use ul Improve-' Be itknown that I,'.WILLIAM C. Dnvnj REAUX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Mic an, have 1n ments in DoorLocks, of which the following is a specification, referencepbeing had therein to the accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to looks and latches and refers more particularly to those designed for use upon the doors ofvehicl'e bodies. n
An object of the invention istoprovide a simple and reliable latch that may be locked from the inside of a door upon which it is mounted so that it cannot be unlocked by.
means of the door handle upon the outside ofthedoor.-"
Another object is. to provide a, single 1 member for actuating both the latch mecha-- spaces 19 which extend throng nism and the lock mechanism.
Another object is to provide a; connection between the actuating member and the lockappended claims.
ing mechanism whereby the lock mechanism will be rendered inoperative when the latchv mechanism is operated from the inside of.
thedoor. Y
With'the above and'other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts as will be more fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary rear elevation of a door latch e bodymg m invention with the cover plat shown in otted lines;
Figures 2, 3, and! 4 are cross sections respectively on the lines 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referringnow to the drawing in which like characters of reference deslgnate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates a case plate which is secured to the inner side of a' ve-' hicle door 2 and which is provided at one edge w th a laterally extending flange 3 that is secured to the outer edge of the door.
Slidably mounted on the case plate is a bolt 4 having a relatively flat shank '5 extending between a pair-of parallel struck-out ears 6 and having an enlarged head 7 extending through the flange 3for engagement with a keeper 8 u on an upright member9 of the vehicle ha y.
, without movin vide a rotatable hub 22 that is journale in with a polygonal openin 25 that receives The bolt 4 is normally retained inextended position by means of a helicalspring 10 having one end thereof rigidly secured between parallel lugs 11 struck out from the case late 1 and having an arm portion 12.
abutting the forward end of alongitudiis pivoted at its lower end to the case plate 1 and that extends upwardly through the slot13 and engages an upstanding lug 15 on the upper edge of the bolt. A cover plate 16 1s preferably arranged parallel to the case plate and is provided with forwardl pro e ct1ng tongues 17 that extend through openlngs in the lateral flange 3 and that are preferably riveted thereover. This cover plate is also secured to the case plate by screws 18 that threadedly engalgle tubular the case plate 1 and areriveted thereto. The cover plate 16 is provided with'an elongated openended slot 20 that extends longitudinally thereof and that registers with the bolt, the shank of the bolt being preferably cut away at its inner end as shown at21 so as to extend beyond the inner end portion of the cover plate.
In order that the bolt may be retracted the lever .14 by a person outside the vehlcle body, I preferably rothe case plate 1 and that has an upstandin actuating arm 23 engageable with a curve arm. 24 extending upwardly from the shank 5'of the bolt. The hub22 is also provided the o ratin shank 26 o a suitable handle 27 us, w en the arm 23 is rocked by the handle 27 to retract the bolt, the lug 15 on the bolt will be disen aged from the lever 14,-. Likewise, when t elever 14 is moved rearwardly to retract the bolt the arm'24 will be moved away from the actuatingarm 23 so that the handle 27 will remain in normal position.
In order that the bolt may be locked in extended positionv when the door is closed bya'person on the inside of the bod sotha't.
handle 27 wi be renthe outside operating f bl d pre era y 6 dered inoperative,
trigger 30 that is pivoted at its nner end .upon the caseplate 1 and that isprovided at its outer end with a recess 81 for miving a lug .32 projecting downwardly from the hub 22. Thus, when the trigger is raised, as shown by the full lines in Figure 1, the forward flat face 33 of the lug 32 will engage the flat forward end of the recess 31 so that the hub 22 will be positively held against rotation in a counter clockwise direction. Inasmuch as the upstanding arm 23 of the hub is normally in engagement with the flan e 3 of the case plate the hub 22 will also be eld against rotation in a clockwise direction.
In order that the lever 14 may be used to actuate the trigger 30, I preferably locate the pivot 35 for the trigger in rear of the pivot 36 for the lever and provide an extenent I desire to have it understood that sion 37 that projects from the lever at a point below the plvot 36 and that is adapted to enga e a curved extension38 that projects upward y fromthe trigger 30 preferably at a point in the rear of the pivot 35. Thus, when the lever 14 is moved forwardly to lock the bolt the extension 37 will engage the extension 38 and will cause the forward end' of the trigger 30 to be swung forwardly sb that the recess 31 will receive thelug 32. For normally retaining the lever 14 in neutral position, I preferably provide a spring 39 that is coiled about one of. the .spacers 19'. One end of the spring 39 abuts the forward edge of the lever 14, while the other end is preferably held by a bent over lug 40 on the case plate 1.
The lever 14 is also used to release the bolt and for this purpose, I preferably provide an upstanding lug 41 on the upper edge of the trigger 30 in advance of the pivot 35 so that w en the lever 14 is moved rearwardly the extension 37 will engage the projection 41 and will cause the forward end of the trigger to be swung downwardly'so that the lug 32 will be d'men aged from the recess 31'; Thus, when the g 14 ma be moved rearwar'dly initially to release t e trigger to unlock the bolt and then may be moved further in a rearward direction to retract the bolt and release the door while maintaining the locking mechanism mgperatlve. t
. hile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the inventionwill be readily 'ap ardo not limit'myself to what is hereinwshown and described and that such changes ma be resorted to when desired as fall wit in the I scap tilof what is claimed.
