Application filed March 10, 19156. "serial m. 93,756.
'l his invention relates to builders hard ware, particularly to hinges, and has for its object the provision of anovel hinge pro-.
vided with ineanswhereby a door or other closure to which itis attached may be held. in a selected position, this feature being of advantage inasmuch as the door maybe left ajar and be prevented from blowing open or closed. j I
An important object is toprovide a hinge having means whereby the latching device may be rendered operative or inoperative at will, depending upon circumstances or what is needed.
An additional object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and ineitpensive in manufacture, easy to install and use, positive in action, efficient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art. i lVith the above and other objects and advantagesin view, the invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawingin which: Figure 1 is a view looking toward a portion of the rear edge ofa door and its jamb showing the device in applied position and arranged to hold the door latched,
Figure2 is a horizontal section taken on substantially the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2, 1
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the latch mounting, and
Figure 5 is a detail view of the keeper plate.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings the letter A designates aportion of a support which maybe a door jamb and B designates a door or other closure mounted upon the support A by the hinge forming the subject matter of this invention.
In carrying out the invention I provide a hinge designated broadly by the numeral 10, which hinge includes leaves '11 and 12 secured respectively upon the support A and platedisengaged from its closureB by any suitable means, these leaves being formed with interfitting knuckles 13 pivotally connected by a pintle pin 14;. Suitably secured to or formed upon the leaf 11 is a curved ratchet arm 15 accommodated within a slot 16 in the closure member B and having its upper edge formed with notches tion, the side edges of this plate being grooved at 21 for accommodation of the guides 19. The outer face of this plate 1s provided with spaced lugs 22 and 23 and its loweredgeis beveled at 24 for cooperation Q 7 with the notches 17 in the curved arm 15. I
Thevdoor or other closure B is recessed at 25 for the accomodation of latch arm 26 which ispivotally mounted at 27 and which is formed with an elongated slot 28 within.
WhIlChiS engaged the lug 22 on the plate 20. Secured to the leaf 12 isa leaf spring 29 on gaging over the lug 23 and acting to urge the shdable plate20downwardly. Secured onthe door atthe slot or recess 25 is a keeper plate 30 havinga slot 31 therein,'this keeper plate being formed with a retaining shoulder 32 adapted to be engaged by the beveled lower edge of the latch26.
In the operation of the device, it will be apparent that if it is not desired to hold the door against movement, the latch 26 is swung upwardly and sprung laterally so as tobe engaged upon the retaining shoulder 32. When this is done the plate. 20 is of 26 is disengaged from the shoulder 32 so that i I the spring 29'may operate to force the plate 20. downwardly so that the beveled lower end 24 thereof will engage within a selected one of the notches 17. It. is believed that the construction, operation and advantages will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art without further explanation.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I" reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will notdepart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
. 1. A hinge of the character described comprising a pair of pivotally connected leaves, a curvedarm carried by one leafand passother leaf connected with said plate forcontrolling the position thereof, and keeper means engageable by said pivoted arm for holding the same stationary and consequently maintaining said plate out of engagement with the notched arm.
2. A hinge of the character described comprising a pair of pivotally connected leaves, a curved arm carried by one leaf and passing through an opening in theother, said arm being notched at its upper edge, a plate mounted for sliding movement upon said other leaf and cooperating with said notches, a pivoted arm connected with said plate for controlling the position thereof and a keeper plate having a slot through which said last named arm projects and provided with a shoulder upon which the last named arm may be engaged for holding the first named plate in elevated position out of engagement with the notches.
3. In a hinge of the character described, a pair of pivotally connected leaves, a curved notched arm carried by one leaf and slidable through the other, a plate slidably mounted upon said other leaf for cooperation with said notches, lugs on said plate, a
spring engaging one lug for urging the plate toward said curved arm, a latch member other leaf having an opening for the pas sage of said arm when the leaves are relatively moved, said armhaving its upper edge provided with a plurality of notches,
the second named leaf being provided with a vertically elongated opening provided with guides at the edges of the upper por-- tion thereof, a keeper plate mounted within said openmg and having its opposite edges grooved for the reception of said guides whereby to be capable of vertical movement, spring means engaging the keeper plate for normally urging it into engagement with the notched arm, a latch member pivoted upon the second named leaf, and a pivotal and slidable connection between the latch member and said plate for moving the latter vertically.
