Description

Patented Apr. 17, 1923.
' arten.
WILLIAM L. MYERS, OF INDUSTRY, ILLINOIS.
LATCH.
A lication filed April 3,
Industry, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Latch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to latches, and more particularly to latches especially designed for use for securing swinging closures operating in horizontal planes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a latch adapted to fall by gravity, to its active or latching position. A still further objectof the invention is to provide a guard forming a part of the latch, whereby the latch may be used for securing barn doors or the like, the guard preventing an animal from operating the same to unlatch the closure.
VVit-h the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention'resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, wit-hout departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a latch constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the latch, the guard being partly broken away to illustrate the latch arm.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the latch.
. Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the latch embodies a plate 5 having a right angled tongue 6 formed integral therewith, the plate also being provided with openings to accommodate a suitable securing means, whereby the plate may be secured to the door jamb. Pivotally supported on the plate 5, is a latching arm 7 which is formed with a right angled extremity 8 adapted to cooperate with the ears 6 of the plate 5 to secure the latching arm 7 in a locking position.
The right angled end of thearm 7, which 1922. Serial No. 549,214.
is indicated at 9, is formed with an opening 10 to receive the shackle of a padlock as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, so that the arm may be flocked against movement.
As shown, the arm 7 has pivotal connection with the plate 5 at a point adjacent to one end of the arm, the remaining portion of the arm being designed to move over a point of contact between the movable closure or door operating against the jamb on which the plate 5 is supported. Thus it will be seen that when the arm 7 is moved to a position as shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, the closure will contact with the arm 7 to restrict movement of the closure.
lVhen the arm 7 is moved to a position as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawing, it is obvious that the arm is out of the path of travel of the closure to the end that the closure may be moved to its open position. It might be further stated that the tongue 6 acts as a support for the. arm 7, when the arm 7 has been moved to its unlocked position.
Associated with the latch member is a keeper including a guard plate 11, which is formed preferably of sheet metal and provided with leg portions 12, each of which being formed with a right angled extremity 13 to provide means for securing the guard to the closure or door. This guard is of a construction to extend over the point of contact between the door and its jamb to substantially house the arm 7, and prevent movement thereof by the nose of an animal endeavoring to operate the latch member.
The arm 7 when in its locking position. contacts with one of the leg portions 12 of the guard, whereupon the arm is held in its locking position.
If it is desired to move the arm to its unlocked position. a person may by gripping the outer or free end of the arm move the same on its pivot to a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a latch. a base plate having a right angled tongue formed intermediate its ends and disposed adjacent to one of the side edges thereof, a pivoted arm having connection with the base plate and having a right angled extremity cooperating with the tongue to lock the closure supporting the latch, said tongue and right angled end.
