Description

A. ROTHSCHILD.
SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 11, 1914.
Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
AARON BOTHSCHILID, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
SASH-LOGK.
Application filed December 17, 1914.
To all 10 hom it may concern:
Be it known that l, AARON Rornsornnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash locks.
The object of my invention is to provide a sash lock which is adapted to lock a sash in a closed or partly open position, so that ventilation may be obtained and yet rigidly holding the sash so that it can not be further opened to allow any one entering through the window.
Another object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and eifective lock of this character which is adapted to automatically release the bolt, so that the window will be locked when closed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and effective lock of this character having certain details of structure hereinafter fully set forth.
in the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window sash showing my improved lock applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlargel vertical sectional view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the lock showing the releasing and holding plate.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the upper sash and 3 my improved lock which is applied to the upper edge of the lower sash 2. The lock 3 is provided with a cylinder 4 in which operates a sliding bolt 5 normally held outwardly by a spring 6, clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. lhe outer end of the sliding bolt is provided with a knob or other means 5', by which the bolt is drawn outwardly by hand. Secured to the upper sash at one side is a plate 7, having the two openings 8 and 9 arranged a few inches apart and into which the sliding bolt 7 is adapted to pass. The plate 7 at one side is provided with a lug 10, the purpose of which will be later, described.
The cylinder 4- is provided with outwardly extending ears 11 and 12 provided with openings and through which pass screws, by means of which the cylinder 1 is fastened to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.
and 2 the lower sash Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
Serial No. 877,693.
the upper end of the lower sash 2. The said cylinder is provided with a recess 14, in which is secured the plate 15 which eX- tends outwardly and is provided with a downwardly extending portion 16 which is normally held in a downward position by the spring of the metal of the plate and holds the sliding bolt in its retracted position within the cylinder 1. lhe said plate is provided with an outwardly and inwardly extending portion 17, which is so arranged as to engage the lug 10 of the plate 7, which in the downward movement of the sash causes the downwardly turned portion 16 of the plate to be moved upwardly out of the path of travel of the sliding bolt and releases the same.
When the sliding bolt is within the upper opening 8 of the plate 7, the sash is locked in an open position and when it is desired to lower the sash, the bolt is drawn outwardly by the knob or handle, and the plate automatically locks the bolt in its retracted position. The sash is then moved downwardly and the outwardly extending portion 17 of the plate engages the lug 10 releasing the bolt and which is forced outwardly by the spring and enters the opening 9 and the sash is locked in its closed position.
Having thus fully described my invention what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A sash lock of the character described comprising a cylinder, attaching means therefor, a sliding bolt within the cylinder and normally outwardly spring held, a spring plate secured'to the upper face of the cylinder and having a downwardly turned portion extending over the end of the barrel and over the end of the bolt, a laterally eXtending ear carried by the plate and having an outwardly extending lug eXtending parallel with the bolt and beyond the end of the barrel and adapted to be engaged by the upper sash for raising the plate to release the bolt, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AARON ROTHSCHILD.
