' C. R. VVIDELL DOOR LOCK AND HOLDER Fllud April 8, 1924 FIG. 1.
Patented July 14, 1925.
UNITED STATES noon LooK AND HOLDER-a Application filed April 8,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. W DnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented certain new nd usef l Impr eme s 1 D Locks and Holders, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to door locks and holders, and aims to provide a novel and improved means for holding doors in closed and open positions, the device being particularly useful for garage and barn doors, although it can be used for other doors also.
A further object is the provision of such a device including bracing means connected to the door frame and slidably connected with the door or doors in such a manner as to hold the door or doors either closed or en. A still further object is the provision of such .a device for holding the doors closed from the inside and including a lock operable by a key from the outside to release the doors so that they can be opened.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an inside elevation showing a pair of the devices as applied to a double door construction.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing one door swung open in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale, showing the lock in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the bolt of the lock projected to release the door.
As shown in the drawing, a pair of holders are used for the doors 10 and 11 which are hinged to the posts 12 of the door frame to swing open outwardly.
A brace 13, formed from a rod or bar, is provided for each door, being hingedly connected at one end, as at 14,110 a bracket 15 1924. Serial No. 704,971.
secured to the corresponding post The bracket 15 projects fromlthe post 12' at the. inner s de of the door, and the brace 13 has] a slidable connection with the door as will pr s nt y pp a i A channel mber 16, prefer-ably of sheet metal, is secured, screws or otherwise, to the inner side of each door, in the same holdzontal plane with the brace, and said member 16 is disposed a horizontal position transversely .of the door. The member 16 has the flanges 17 extending inwardly awa from the door and provided with tlie secondary flanges 18 extending toward one an other and spaced apart to rovidfea slot 119: The channel member -ormsa track or slide-way for the end portion ofthe brace. Thus, the terminal 20 of the brace o'pplosite to the hinge 14; extends at angle to'pasS through the slot 19 into the trackor slideway, and said. terminal 20 of the brace has a -he 2. beh nd h flan 8 ie r t rol e 22 are dispo d d lnv between the lan e 18 a d W b of t eh i ber 16, thereby slidably connecting the'brac'e with the door, for the sliding movement of the brace in the member 16 when the door is swung open and closed.
In order to hold each door in closed or open position, the lower flange 18 is provided with a notch 23 into which the terminal 20 of the brace 13 drops when the door is in closed position, and the lower flange 17 has an opening 24 into which the T-head of the brace also drops at the same time, whereby the free end portion of the brace is locked to the member 16, to hold the doors in closed position, and preventing the door from being swung open unless the brace is disengaged from the notch 28 and opening 24:. The lower flanges 18 and 17 are provided with the notch 25 and opening 26, respectively, at a point nearer the hinge of the door, for the engagement of the terminal 20 and head of the brace when the door is swung open, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the brace holds the door in such position. By lifting the brace in either locking position, the door can be swung, and when the door is moved to either closed or open position, the brace will drop into the corresponding notch and opening of the member 16 to hold the door in the position to which it has been swung.
As shown in the drawing, the holding or bracing devices are located at the inner side I when the key 28 is inserted and turned to project or raise the bolt 29, the T-head 21 of the corresponding latch is raised out of the opening 24, thereby raising the terminal portion of the brace out of the notch 23, and this releases or unlatches the door 10, so that said door can'be swung open, the door 10 preferably having a handle 31 on r the outside for convenience in swinging the door outwardly. When the door 10 has been swung open, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the corresponding brace 13 drops into the notch 25 and opening 26 of the corresponding member 16. After the door 10 is opened, the brace 13 of the door 11 is readily raised to release or unlatch the door 11, so that said door can be swung open also, it being noted that the adjacent edges of the doors 10 and 11 are overlapped, as at 30, so that the door 11 cannot be opened until the door 10 is opened. To close the doors, the door 11 is first closed, and the supported brace, a member to be secured to a door, the brace slida-bly' engaging said member, said member having a portion for the engagement of the brace to hold the door closed, and a lock to be carried by the door having a member arranged to engage said brace when the brace engages said portion of the first named member so as to disengage the brace from the first named member to permit the door to be opened, said brace moving away from said member of the lock when the door is opened.
2. A door holder comprising a hingedly supported brace, a member to be secured to a door, the brace being slidable in said member, said member having an opening into which the brace drops by gravity to hold the door closed, and a lock to be carried by the door having a bolt to be projected upwardly under said opening for raising brace out of the opening to permit the door to be opened.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature. I
