Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM F. SOI-IAGHI,
OF G OS HE N INDIANA.
COMBINED DOOR CHECK AN-ZD- SEGURER.
Application filed July 18,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patente.d1)'ec. 8, 1908.
1908.. Seria1.No. 444,224.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SOHACH'1, of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Oombined'l)oor Check and Securer; and I hereby: declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description. thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to door securersand in particular is an improvement upon: the door-check or holder shown in E. L. Schachts patent No. 573,300, dated December 15, 1896, which holder comprises two brackets respectively adapted to be connected; to a door, and to the door casing, and twolinks, one of which is pivotally connected. to the bracket attached to the casing and the other of which is adapted to be detachably engaged with the bracket attached to the door, so as to permit the door to be partly opened and yet prevent it from being opened sufiiciently to permit the entry of, a person; the parts are so constructed that the door can be held ajar, and the link cannot be disconnected from the door-bracket until the door is closed.
The present invention provides novel means whereby said patented holder can be also made to answer as a night-lock, and when the door is fully closed the parts can be so adjusted as to make a 'ositive closure for the door, which cannot e opened until the closure is released from the inside.
The invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description of the improvement of the parts for which protection is desired, and as set forth in the claims.
In said drawings-Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of a door and door frame with the device ap lied thereto; the door being shown in close position. Fig. 2 is a similar view the door being shown partly open. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the links in pendent position. Fig. is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the parts in locked position; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of Fig.
The door casing A and the door B may be of any ordinary construction, and are only conventionally illustrated in the drawing to show the mode of applying the device thereto.
1 indicates the door fixture or bracket, which is provided with a base 1 secured to the door by screws 1 and is formed with a horizontal projection 1 having on its extremity upper and lower pins each. of which has a head 1. projecting laterally. at one side of the pin as shown; The two; pins are provided upon this bracket to enable the attachment to be applied to right or lefthand doors with. equal facility.
Attached to the door casing about in the same plane as the bracket 1, is a bracket 2, which is provided. at one end with an aperture for engagement. of. the shank 4 of a in Fig. 1, and said bracket is provided on its inner end, adjacent the door, with a recess 2, in the inner face of the bracket; and in this part of the bracket is formed two. holes 2 2,-. through either of which-may be aassed the stem ofa bolt 3, the head 3 of w ich is from. turning by its engagement with the sides of the recess, see Fig. 1,. while the threaded portion. of the bolt projects outwardly. at right. angles to the bracket, andt on the threaded portion of said. bolt: is a finger.- nut 3 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
Pivotally attached to stud 4 is a link 5, to the free end of which is pivoted a similar link 5 which has in its free end a slot 5 corresponding in contour to the shape of heads 1 of pins 1 and when the door is fully closed the link 5 can be engaged with the uppermost pin 1 by sliding its slotted end over the head of the pin. The mode of connecting the links 5, 5', with the brackets 1 and 2, is substantially similar to that described in the aforesaid patent.
In using my improved holder the link 5 is connected to the pin 1 while the door is in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 1 and when the door is partly opened, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the link 5*, and consequently the aperture 5 therein, will assume such a position with respect to the head 1 of the pin 1 that the link cannot be removed or disconnected from the said stud. But when the door is fully closed, the aperture 5 will register with the head 1 and the link 5 may then be readily raised out of engagement with said stud, the rotatable stud 4 permit ting such movement of the said link. When the link 5 is disengaged from pin 1 the link can assume a pendent position against the casing, as indicated in Fig. 3, where it will be out of the way, and the door may then be opened and closed in the ordinary manner.
When it is desired to use the device as a stud. 4,. pivoted to the bracket as indicated.
concealed.- in the recess 2 and prevented lock to secure the door in closed position, the link 5 is first disen aged from the pin 1 after the door is tight y closed, then the link 5 is swung inward against the bracket 1 and between the nut 3 and the bracket 2; and then nut 3 e is screwed up against link 5 forcing its free end tightly against the bracket 1, see Figs. 45, and will rigidly secure the door in closed position. As the stud 4 is pivoted to bracket 2 the links 5, can be easily adjusted to any desired position. When it is desired to use the device as a holder simply the nut is loosened and the link 5 a rengaged with the pin as shown in Fig. 1.
lhe parts are so proportioned that when the device is used as a holder the links will not strike nut 3 in the limited movements of the door permitted by the device. Two holes are provided in the bracket 2 so that the bolt 3 can be adjusted to the lowermost hole, according to whether the device is used on a right or left-hand swinging door.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a door-securing device, the combination of a bracket attached to the door, a bracket attached to the door-casing, links pivotally connected to said brackets, a threaded bolt attached to the casing-bracket, and a thumb-nut on said bolt adapted to engage the link attached to the door casing to cause it to lock the door in closed position.
2. The combination of a casing bracket having a recess in one end, and a plurality of holes communicating with said recess, a bolt adapted to be passed through any one of the holes and have its head engaged in the recess, a nut on said bolt, a door-bracket, and a link pivoted to said casing bracket and adapted to engage the door-bracket and be held in engagement therewith by said thumb-nut when it is desired to lock the door, and means for detachably connecting the link with the door-bracket.
8. In a door-securing device, the combination of a bracket attached to the casing and having a recess in one end, and a plurality of holes communicating with said recess, a bolt adapted to be passed through one of the holes and have its head engage with the re cess, a nut on said bolt, a door-bracket attached to the door, a link pivoted to said casing bracket and adapted to engage the doorbracket and be held in engagement therewith by said nut when it is desired to lock the door, and a second link for detachably connecting the first link with the door bracket when the first link is disengaged from the nut.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesss.
WILLIAM F. SOHAGHT. Vfitnesses ORVILLE L. SIMMONS, EUGENE O. DAVIS.
