JOSEPH J. THULL, OF BYD, WISCONSIN.
DOOR-LATCH.
Application filed April 12, 1916.
To ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Josnrir J. THULL, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at- Boyd, in the county of Chippewa and State of lisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches; and I do hereby desire the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a door latch and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and eiiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a spring pressed bolt slidably secured to the door and normally in an engagement with a keeper and which is capable of being operated to disengage the lkeeper from either side of the door.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel means of adjusting the tension of the spring of the sliding bolt to facilitate a correct movement of the sliding bolt into the keeper when the door is in a closed position.
still further object of this invention is to provide an adjustable keeper, which is adapted to be moved away and toward the door as desired.
lith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the descrip` tion proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a door, illustrating my invention applied thereto. and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, illustrating the means of operating` the sliding bolt from either side of the door and also illustrating the means of decreasing Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
serial No. 90,614.
numeral 1 indicates a door hinged, to a wall'Q of a building and 3 the jamb/ of the door. Secured to the door 1 adjacent the opening edge thereof, are a pair of relatively spaced brackets 4, which slidably receive a bolt 5, which has secured thereto a rod 6. The rod 6 extends through the rod 5 upon each side thereof and one endL of the bolt extends through an elongated slot 7 in the door 1. Secured to each end of the rod G are knobs 8, providing means whereby the bolt 5 may be slid within the brackets et from either side of the door 1. The bolt 5 is provided with a reduced eX- tension 9 upon one end thereof which is adapted to be slidably received in an adjustable bracket 1() having a recess 11 to receive the extension 9. The adjustable bracket 10 is provided with a reduced eX- tension 18 having an elongated slot 14 for receiving a bolt 15 which eXtends through the door l. The bolt 15 has a nut 16 for engaging the reduced extension 14, providing means whereby the adjustable bracket 10 may be moved toward and from the sliding bolt as desired. Mounted upon the reduced extension 9 of the sliding bolt is a coil spring 17 and a washer 1S. The coil spring 17 is adapted to bear upon the bolt 5 and the collar 18 which engages the end of the adjustable bracket 10 for urging the bolt 5 in the direction of the open end of the door 1 at all times. rlhe free end of the bolt 5 is beveled as indicated at 20 to be received within a keeper 21.
While I havefshown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A door latch comprising a bolt slidably secured to a door, means connected to the bolt for operating said boltfrom either side of the door, an extension formed on said bolt. an adjustable bracket provided with a recess in one end thereof to receive the extension, an extension formed on the adjustable bracket and provided with an elongated slot therein,4 a bolt extending 2, Y Y l 1,205,061
