VINCENT R. MCBRIDE, OF STILLWVATER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
SASH LOCK.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,845, dated August 12, 1902. Application filed May 17, 1902. Serial No. 107,861. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT R. IVICBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stillwater, in the county of Payne and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Sash-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash-locks; and it has for its object to provide an article of this class of great simplicity of construction, which shall be capable of being easily applied to any ordinary window-sash and which while easily operated shall be very effective in holding, the sash securely at any point to which it may be adjusted.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with a casing-plate, of an operating-lever and a holding-spur which are constructed and relatively arranged to operate in the manner which will be now more fully described with reference to the drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side view showing my improved holder attached for operation to a windowsash of ordinary construction. Fig. 2 is a side view, taken from the opposite side and on a larger scale, of the device removed from the sash. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device seen from the end at which the operating-lever and the stop of the same are located and with dotted lines showing the lever disengaged from the stop.
Corresponding parts of the views are indi cated by like numerals of reference.
1 designates a plate formed, preferably, of sheet metal and preferably with straight upper and lower edges, as 2 2. The inner side edge 3, which in practice lies adjacent to the window-frame, is straight, while the opposite outer edge is preferably rounded, as shown at 4, mainly with the View of presenting a neat appearance and also to avoid any sharp corners whereby the hand of the party operatingthe device might be caught and injured. The rounded edge is provided with an inturned spur 5, forming a catch, the purpose of which will be presently set forth,
Upon the rear sidc of the plate I is pivoted a lever 7, which is preferably made of the curvedshape indicated in the drawings and which is provided at its outer end, which is the end adjacent to the rounded edge of the casing-plate, with a bent portion 9, to which a handle 10 is pivotally attached by means of a pin 11. This handle may be adjusted to pass the spur or catch 5 by turning it upon its pivot to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Pivotally connected with the opposite end of the lever 7 is a pin or spur 15, which extends in an outward direction through a guiding staple 12 and beyond the edge 3 of the casing-plate. It will be seen that by turning the curved lever 7 upon its pivot by means of the operating-handle the pin or spur 11 may be moved either in an inward or outward direction to be disengaged from or to engage the frame of the sash to which the invention has been applied.
To apply my invention to a window-sash, one of the side rails of the latter is provided with a recess to receive the casing-plate and with a hole or recess of sufficient depth to accommodate the operating-lever, the pin, or spur, and the guiding-staple for the latter. The handle part extends beyond the sashrail, which does not interfere with its operation. By raising the lever-handle above the catch 5 the pin or spur is withdrawn. By depressing it the said pin or spur is forced into the window-casing, thus securely holding the sash at any elevation to which it may have been adjusted. In this locked position the lever is secured by so turning its pivoted handle 10 that the latter shall engage against the under side of the catch 5. To unlock, the handle 10 is turned upon its pivot 11 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, when it may freely pass the catch 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the casing-plate provided at its outer edge with a bent portion forming a catch, of a lever pivoted to the under side of said casing-plate and having a bent operating end, a handle pivoted to the same and adapted for engagement with the catch of the casing, and a pin or spurpivotally connected with the opposite end of the lever, extending through a staple-attachedto the casing-plate, and beyond the inner edge of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. In a sash-lock, the combination with a casing-plate having a bent portion or catch, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as of a lever mounted pivotally upon said casmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in ing-plate and provided at its opposite ends the presence of two Witnesses.
with a handle adapted for engagement with VINCENT R. MCBRIDE. the catch of the casing-plate, and with a piv- Witnesses:
otally-connected pin or spur, substantially JOHN E. SATER,
as set forth. A. Z. HUTTO.
