Description

A. E: YOU NG. Knob Attachment. 4
No. 205,941. Y Patented July 9,1878.
Witnes3es: Inventor:
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ALONZO E. YOUNG, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,941, dated July 9, 1878; application filed May 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. YOUNG, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spindles for Door-Knobs, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective of a door-knob embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of my improved spindle, A and B showing the longitudinal screws or expansive ends.
The invention relates to expansive spindles for door-knobs.
My invention consists of a square spindle of the requisite size, with a longitudinal screw in one or both ends, the head of the screw being drilled and tapped to receive the screw that fastens the shank of the knob to the spindle. By turning the longitudinal screw, the length of the spindle may be increased or diminished, to enable it to fit exactly, without other device, the designed thickness.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap spindle, that is complete in itself, and will answer all the purposes of expansion and contraction, and applicable to the various kinds of door-knobs.
Heretofore the adjustment of knobs to doors of diiferent thickness has been effected by spindles having two or more screw-holes near each end of the spindle, and then adjusting the knob to the door by means of rings or washers, to make up the difference between the hole in spindle and the door, or by another method of complicated and expensive extensions by means of attachments to the shanks of the knobs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the spindle, the adj ustable screw or screws in its ends, and the angular recessed knob-shanks, adapted to the head of the screw and spindle, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
ALONZO E. YOUNG.
