Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALMON COOLEY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENING DOOR-KNOB SPINDLES.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 16,047, dated November 11, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMoN CooLEY, of the city and county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs; and I hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had t-o the following drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Y Figure l represents a longitudinal section of a door handle attached to part of a door and Fig-2 aview of the conical slide C.
The letters of reference indicate the same parts in the different igures.
My improvement consist-s in a new mode of attaching knobs to handles by which the knobs can be readily adjusted to doors of different thicknesses.
To a square spindle S, one knob K is firmly Xed, upon one end, while the other end which projects on the opposite side of the door carries a conical slide C, which fits loosely upon the spindle S, and concentric therewith. A screw thread is formed upon C at its inner end which corresponds with a female screw on the inside of the socket of the knob K. The outer end of C is tapered oli from about the middle of its length to the spindle, and is then slit down about two thirds of its length in the ,angles of its square hole, for the purpose of giving its conical end a certain degree of elasticity. The hole in the socket of K becomes narrower in the lower portion of its depth, forming a shoulder which presses against the elastic part of the slide when the knob K- is screwed upon it.
IV are washers placed upon the door, they have small projections which drive into the surface of the door, and retain the washers in position. I
In operation the spindle passes through the door, and lock, in the usual manner, the slide C is placed on the spindle, and pushed up to the washer on the door. The knob K is then screwed on to the slide C, the shoulder in the socket jams the flexible part of the conical slide down to the sides of the square spindle, and holds it fast; thus securing the knob in any desired position upon the spindle by the friction Of the elastic portions of C upon the spindle. The knob K is prevented from turning on the slide when once adjusted by a set screw I. This simple and effective arrangement presents the advantages of ready adjustment to doors of any of the usual range of sizes, without labor or the alteration of any of its parts.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The conical slide C, when combined with the spindle S and knob K and constructed in the manner described for the purposes speciied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
ALMON COOLE Y.
Vitnesses Jos. R. HAWLEY, JOHN HOOKER.
