Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. ERB, OF STRASBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR-LOCK.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 14,714, dated April 22, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JoHN B. ERB, of Strasburg township, county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks with Night-Keys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a Jfull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention is the shape and construction of the night key and the drawing of the bolt by pressing upon the knob instead of turning it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the frame of the lock, suitable for a right or left hand door; B, the lower bolt; O, the sliding spring-drop operated on by the spring D; E, the ward which has the tenons on to suit a particular key; F, a guard which operates on a center, the one end projecting outside of the frame A and the other end, which by being raised or lowered operates on the lower part of the semicircular slide G, so as to hold and fasten the slide Gr firmly and prevent it from being operated on by the outside knob H.
The slide G operates on a pivot I when the outside knob H is pressed on, or slightly turned for the purpose of drawing back the bolt J when the door is to be opened. The upper end of bolt J extends beyond the frame A so that by pressing against this upper end, the bolt J can be withdrawn,
on the inside of doors, while the bolt J could not have been operated on by the outside knob H, as the semicircular slide Gr was secured by the guard F. rIhe knob H is easily operated on by merely pressing it downward, or slightly turning it, which is to avoid the ditliculty always heretofore occurring in turning the common knobs to open the door; the knobs usually getting loose and not operating on their bolts; but with this improvement the knob H is pressed downward in an oval slot K, and thus easily operates on the slide Gr and the bolt J is drawn backward, without any wear or tear or putting the lock out of order.
L is the aperture in which the night key is inserted, which passes through the Ward M and draws back the upper bolt J.
The night key is made tubular, so that when it is put through the aperture L, the handle of the key is pressed inward, and forces out the Wing N (which iies back to its place in the tube, when the key is being withdrawn) which answers to and ts in the ward M, of the aperture L, and draws back the bolt J; O, the catch which holds the bolt.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 'Ihe devices of the knob H, oval slot K and semicircular slide G as they operate upon the bolt J, all in combination substantially as herein described.
JOHN B. ERB.
