Description
UNTTED STATES PATENT onirica.
NATHAN BENHAM, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENING DOOR-KNOBS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,595, dated April 8, 1856.'
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN BENHAM, of Hartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manner of Fastening the Knobs of Doors; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the fastening of knobs, of doors of different thicknesses, to any distance on the shaft without the aid of washers.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l shows plan of knobs and shaft; Fig. 2, side view of same; Fig. 3, end view of knobs and shaft.
Letter A, knobs; letter B, shaft; letter C, screw; D, wedge shaped hole in knob; E, slot cut in shaft; F, door; Gr, collar on door.
The knobs A I construct in the usual manner with the exception of the hole being made wedging on two opposite sides as seen at D Fig. 2. The shaft B has a slot E cut in both ends for the purpose of opening the sides of the shaft B to fit the wedge shaped hole D in knobs A. The screw C is screwed into the knob A the end being pointed to fit the beveled edge of the slot E as seen at C-B in Fig. 3. The screw C being screwed down in the slot E in shaft B opens it thereby throwing out the sides 3h of the shaft B to fit the wedge shaped hole D in knobs A and preventing the same from pulling off.
The advantages of this improvement is that this fastening can be adjusted to any thickness of doors without the aid of washers or packing between the door and knobs that is now generally used, also the advantage of fastening the knob tight to the shaft.
What I claim as my improvement in securing the shaft to door knobs is-.
s The use of the slotted shaft E with the wedged shaped hole D as described, said shaft being opened bya screw or its equiva- 5G lent in the manner' substantially herein set forth.
NATHAN BENHAM.
