Description

S ES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS B. ATTERBURY AND WM. WARVIOK, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO WARWICK, ATTERBURY & CO., OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FACE-PLATE FOR LOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent N o. 15,456, dated July 29, 1856.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS B. ATTER- Bri-RY and IVILLIAM VVaRwIoK, bothl of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Right and Left Hand Locks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accoin panying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in using for a lock or other fastening, a distinct and separate gua-rd or face plate, which is shaped in such a manner in relation to the case or skeleton fraine of a lock, that it can be placed on either of the two sides of said case or skeleton frame, whereby the said lock or fastening inay be used on doo-rs, which open to the right or to the left-hand side, the face plate being always put on the outside. Y
To enable others, skilled in the art to lnake and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operations.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the case or outside of a lock; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the separate guard or face plate; Fig. 3 a section through the line I-II of the lock case (Fig. l) and of the face plate (Fig. 2), the face plate being placed on the one side of the case.
A, A, is the. case of a lock, which case may be of any known, shape, close or perforated by openings, as for instance, shown at a, a, a; b, l), are the screw holes, by which the lock is fastened to the door; c, c, the keyhole; CZ, (Z, the knob shank opening.
B, B, is the separate guard or face plate, which is provided with openings, corresponding to the openings l), b, c and d, of the lock case, viz: ZJ Zn, openings for the fastening screws; c', opening for the key, and d for the knob shank. The face plate is fastened down on the lock case, by means of the saine screws, by which the lock is fastened to the door. As the screw holes,
keyand knob shank openings (b, b, c and d) are in the saine position on the other side of the lock, and also the corresponding holes b b c and el on the other side of the face plate. rally fit on the other side of the lock, so that by said plate either of the sides of the lock can be Inade the face.
The advantages in the use of a separate face plate are: that it can be finished by itself; thus in japanning or enanieling it, it may be dipped into the japanning or enaineling substance; when in ordinary locks, where the face or faces are to be linished, when connected with the lock parts, the japanning or enarneling substance has to be brushed or painted on with great care, notwithstanding which the substance is apt to enter into the openings of the case, preventing thereby the parts of the lock to operate, and making it necessary to be cleaned out again; the lock case, when it has the separate face plate does not require any finish, as far as the plate covers it, and it can be made in any shape, best suitable for the purpose of keeping the parts of the lock together, without any regard to its eX- ternal appearance, or it may be a inere skeleton frame. As the face plate forms a part, which has no immediate connection with the operating parts of the lock or fastening, it may get injured or broken without injury to the lock itself.
Having thus fully described our improvement, what we claim hereiny as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The separate or distinct guard or face plate of such a form in relation to case or skeleton frame of a. lock or other fastening, that it may be put on either of the two sides of the said case or frame, whereby either of the sides can be made the `face of the said lock or fastening, substantially as described.
THOS. B. ATTERBURY. WILLIAM WARWICK.
Witnesses THos. STEEL, HENRY MOSER.
