JOSEPH H. COHEN, WILLIAM A. PENNOYEB, AND WILLIAM H. CROSBY, OF
OATSKILL, NEW YORK; SAID CROSBY ASSIGNS HIS RIGHT TO SAID COHEN AND PENNOYER.
EMPROVEMENT IN DOGR-BQLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,453, dated August 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JosEPH H. COHEN, WIL- LIAM A. PENNOYER, and WILLIAM H. OEos- BY, of Catskill in the county of Greene and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Bolts; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in a reversible cogged bolt, operated by means of a cogged arm having projections on its outer end to lock the bolt, and further so arranged that it-may be turned from the outside by a key, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved door-bolt, and Fig. 2. is a section of the same.
A represents the boltplate, near each end of which is a loop, B, for the passage of the bolt 0. This bolt is, on its upper edge or side, provided with cogs a. a, arranged in the center of the bolt so that the same may be used on either a right or left-hand door. Above the bolt 0, in the center of the plate A, is pivoted an arm, D, provided with cogs b around the pivoted end, which cogs mesh with the cogs a on the bolt. It will readily be seen that by turning the arm D on its pivot in either direction the bolt-O will be moved in the opposite direction either to open or look the same. Upon the outer end of the arm D is a projection, d, standing at right angles with the arm, which, when the bolt is locked, comes in contact with the inner end of the bolt, driving the same a trifle further and holding it, making it burglar-proof. A catch, f, pivoted on the inner loop B is then turned over the shank of the knob E attached to the outer end of the arm, holding said arm in its place. To open or unlock the bolt turn the catch f, and then, by taking hold of the knob E, turn the arm D to the left, which will move the bolt inward. The projection d extends on both sides of the arm D, so that it can be used on both right and left hand doors. By adding a key, G, it makes a good nightlatch. In this case a suitable hole or mortise is made in the door, with a plate, H, on the outside, and a slot, t", in the under side of the arm D to receive the bit of the key.
. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the cogged bolt 0 and the pivoted cogged arm D with its projectiond, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein.
