IMPROVEMENT m SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,637, dated September 24, 1872;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. STEPHEN- SON, J r., of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of'Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Sash Look, of which the following is a specification: l
Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of my improved fastening, part of the case being removed to show the construction. .Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line at m, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved sash-lock, simple in construction,
easily operated, and effective in operation, locking the sash into'any position into which it may be raised; and it consists in the construction and combination of a weighted lever having ball, inclined plate, and knob-pins, together with the case, bolt, and sash, as hereinafter more fully. described.
Arepresents a part of the window frame or casing, and B a side bar of a window-sash, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. 0 is a case, which islet into the sash-barBso that its face-plate maybe flush with the edge of the sash-bar. D is a lever, which is placed within and pivoted to the case 0, or to a support attached 'to said case. The middle part of the outer end of the lever D is cut away, and the arms d thus formed are bent to one side at right angles, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thusformin g a space in the forward endof the lever D, which a ball or block, E, made of rubber or othersuitablematerial, may protrude to come in contact with the side of the casing or frame 'A. To the lever'D is attached an inclined plate, F, the forward side of which may be corrugatedor roughened to enable it to take a firmer hold upon the ball or block E. The inner end of the lever D is weighted so as, when left free, to always hold the ball or block E in through part of the space between the said casing and the inclined plate F, securely holding the sash.
To the inner weighted end of the lever D is attached a pin, which passes out through a curved slot in the case 0 and sash B, and has a knob or other handle, G, attached to it, so that when it is desired to lower the sash the inner or weighted end of the lever D may be raised, lowering its outer end and withdrawing the ball or block E from the casing A. H. is a bolt, which slides in guides in the lower part of the case 0, and which moves out through a hole in the face-plate of the said case 0 to enter a hole in the casingA and thus lock the sash in place. The bolt His pushed out to lock the sash by means of a pin attached to its inner end, and which passes out through a slot in the case 0 and sash B. Upon the outer part of the lever D is formed a toe, (1 which, when the said forward end of the said lever is lowered, strikes against a shoulder formed upon the bolt H and draws.
it inward.
I am aware that sash-locks bearing some resemblance to mine have been in use; but they employ springs, while I carry my ball up by the weighted end of lever and. form a lock with a much less'number of parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The end-weighted lever D d having ball E, inclined plate F, and knob-pins Gr, combined with case 0, bolt H, and sash B, all being constructed and arranged as and for the purpose described.
