FASTENING FOR MEETING RAILS OF SASHES.
Patented June 2., 1885.

ATTORNEYS.
NITE STATES PATENT rrrcn.
FASTENING FOR MEETlNG-RAlLS OF SASHES.
SPEQ'IFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 819,288, dated June 2, 1885. Application filed April 7, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. MOKEEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure l is a perspective view showing the parts of my improved sash lock or fastener attached to the sashes of a window in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the device in a locked position. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line m x in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4. is a detail view of the parts composing my improved sash-lock separated or detached from each other.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to fasteners for the meeting-rails of sashes, and for other purposes; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
WVith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates a metallic casing, which may, as in the drawings, be provided with flanges B, having holes or perforations O to receive suitable fastening-screws. The said casing is by preference made square in cross-section, and it accommodates a longitudinally-sliding yoke, D, in which is journalcd a cylindrical bolt, E. The rear end of the latter, which extends through a perforation in the end of the casing, is provided with a knob or handle, F, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated, and the front end of said bolt is screw'threaded, as shown at G.
Pivoted in the bottom of the casing is a suitably-constructed latch, H, adapted to retain the bolt in position when it is drawn back into the casing.
I is a box or casing, adapted to be attached to the meeting-rail of the upper sash, to receive the projecting end of the lock-bolt E. The inner end of the said casing is provided with a screw-threaded socket or recess, J, to receive the screw-threaded front end, G, of the bolt E. The said box or casing I is also provided with a spring, K, adapted to engage and operate the forwardly-projecting end of the latch H when the sashes come together, thereby releasing the lock-bolt and causing it to engage the socket I, on entering which the said bolt E may be turned by its handle F, thus causing its screw-threaded end to enter the socket J, thus drawing the sashes together and securing them tightly.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the operation is thoroughly effective.
I would state that, when desired, the casings A and I may be so constructed as to be seated in suitable perforations in the meeting-rails of the sashes by simply making the said casings cylindrical, or of any other suitable shape which will admit of their being readily seated and attached in the recesses provided for their reception. When this construction is adopted, the cost of production will be considerably reduced, inasmuch as finishing or ornamentation will be dispensed with, with the exception of a suitable escutcheon-plate of the casing A and the knob F.
Other modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention may be ultimately adopted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a fastener for the meeting-rails of sashes, the combination of a casing attached to one of the sashes, a yoke arranged to slide longitudinally in the said casing, a lock-bolt journaled in the said yoke, and having a project- IOO ing screw-threaded end, a latch arranged to engage the said yoke, and a casing attached to the other sash and having a screw-threaded socket at its inner end, and a spring arranged my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
THOMAS L. MOKEEN.
5 to engage the latch, substantially as herein de- Witnesses:
scribed, for the purpose set forth. J OHN S. NOBLE, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as S. L. FIsLER.
