PATENT FFME HENRY S. LOCKWOOD, OF SOUTH NORl/VALK, CONNECTICUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,681, dated November 30, 1897. Application filed August 24, 1897. Serial No. 649,304. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LOOKW OOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Connect-Y ing Lock-IIubs to Roll-Backs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
" My invention relates to the class of locking mechanisms in which a latch-bolt and the rollbacks by which it is operated are contained in a case adapted for attachment to the inner side of a door in `connection with independent lock mechanism adapted to be operated by a key from the outer side of a door; and my invention has for its object to provide a simple and novel connection between the oscillating hub of the lock mechanism which is operated by the key and one of the roll-backs within the latch-case, the requirements being that `the connection of the parts be rigid, so that the movements will be positive, that the connection be adapted to doors of varying thickness without any fitting whatever, and that it be simple enough so that it may be applied by a person not necessarily a locksmith and with ordinary tools.
With these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel connection which I will now describe, referring by numbers to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a horizontal section of the edge of a door, showing the application thereto of an ordinary rim night-latch and locking mechanism of ordinary construction, said latch mechanism and said lock mechanism being connected by means of my novel connection. Figs. 2 and'3 are views showing the parts which comprise the latch mechanism and the lock mechanism, respectively, separated, Fig. 2 showing the latch-case removed from the door and also showing the connecting-rod and the nut, and Fig. 3 showing the plate upon the inner side of the door and through the opening in said plate the end of the hub and the opening therein which receives the other end of the connecting-rod; Fig. 4, a perspective of the connecting-rod and nut detached;
vplaces use the term rod only.
and Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the inner end of the lock-case, showing dierently-shaped openings in the end of the hub to receive differently-shaped connecting-rods.
lA denotes an escutcheon 2, atnmbler-case key by which the hub may be operated. I.
have referred to the connecting device as a rod, bar, or spindle,7 but will in other understood that it is wholly immaterial what shape in cross-section this connecting device is made, the essential requirements being that the ends of the rod be of such shape as to rigidly engage openings 5 in the end of the plug and in roll-back 15, and that the rod be provided with a thread 16 to engage a nut 17, which is itself held against rotary movement.
8 denotes the case for the latch mechanism; 8a, the inner plate thereof; 9, the latch-bolt, having the usual rods 10 with heads 11; 12, a thumb-knob having the usual recess 13, which receives the connecting-rod; 14, a roll-back rigidly secured to the thumb-knob, and av roll-back journaled in the inner plate Si of case 8 and adapted to engage the heads 11 of the bolt-rods wholly independently of rollback 14, so that the latch-bolt may be operated from the inner side of the door by means of the thumb-knob and roll-back 14, and may be operated from the-outer side of the door by means of the key, the hub, roll-back 15, and my novel connection between roll-back 15 and the hub. Roll-back 15 is provided with an opening 5 through it corresponding with the opening 5 at the inner end of the hub. 18 denotes a plate which in use lies upon the inner side of the door, is received in a recess 19 in the inner plate 8a of case 8, and is connected to the tumbler-case by screwbolts 20. This plate is provided with an opening 21, having an angular portion 22, which is engaged by an angular portion 23 of nut 17. Opening 18 is made large enough to permit the nut to pass into it freely, the nut being held against rotation by the engagement of the angular portion thereof with the angular portion of the opening.
It should bev IOO The operation is as follows: Having placed the lock mechanism and plate 18 in position and secured them by screw-bolts 20, the operator places nut 17 at suiiieient distance from one end of rod G to permit the end of the rod to engage the recess 5 in the inner end of the hub, leaving the nut lying in opening 21, the angular portion of the nut engaging the angular portion of the opening. The operator then places the latch-case in position and secures it by screws 24C, the other end of rod G passing into recess 13 in the thumb-knob, as clearly shown in the drawings. It will be noticed in Fig. l that the face of the nut is in engagement with the face of rollback l5, so that any appreciable endwise movement of the rod is prevented, it being of course understood that slight play of the parts is required to permit slight endwisc movement of the rod when it is oscillated in the thread of the nut. It will thus be seen that oscillation of the hub by means of the key will necessarily impart similar movement to roll-back 15 and will retract the latch-bolt in the usual Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a roll-back within a latch-case and an oscillating key-hub not in the latch-case, said roll-back having an opening through it and the hub having a similar opening in its inner end, of a plate adapted for attachment to the inner side of a door and having an opening through it a portion of which is made angular, a nut adapted to lie in said opening and having an angular portion to engage the angular portion of the opening, whereby the nut is held against rotation, and a rod adapted to engage the openings in the hub and the roll-back and threaded to engage the nnt so that rotation of the hub will carry the roll-back.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY S. LOCKWOOD.
