Description

W. S. GARDNER.
WINDOW SASH FASTENER.
(No Model.)
No. 580,856.' Patented Aprp20, 1897.
INVEN TO]? nromvsrS WITNEssEs W? M f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. GARDNER, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
WlNDOW-SASH FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 580,856, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed July '7, 1896. Serial No- 598,358. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in window-sash fasteners, the object of the invention being to supply an article of this character which is so constructed as to be adaptable for attachment to a window-frame and the upper and lower sash thereof, whereby the upper sash can be locked either in a closed position or in a partially-open position for the purpose of ventilation.
The device is simple in construction, inexpensive, and durable, and it can be readily attached to any window-frame of ordinary construction.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a window-frame, showing my improved device secured thereto. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail views of the several portions of the device, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on a line 5000 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention the upper sash A of a window-frame is provided in the face thereof with a countersunk plate B, which said plate has a vertical series of keyshaped slots Z) therein adapted for engagement with a key 0. This said key is normally maintained within two cylindrical casings D and E, which said casings are supplied, respectively, with flanges d and e, the flanges (2 having extensions 6 projected at right angles therefrom, and all these said flanges are provided with apertures 1 for the reception of screws 2 for securing the said parts to the framework of a window. The plate B is also secured by means of screws 3.
In attaching the device to the framework of a window the upper sash A is first provided with the plate B. The casin g D is then secured to the upper surface of the sashframe A, and the casing E is secured to the framework A in such a manner and position as to make the two cylindrical portions exactlyregister with each other.
The casing D is further provided throughout its length with a channel or groove (1', and the casing E has a channel 6 therethrough, and when the two said casings are properly adjusted these channels will register with each other, and in attaching the key 0 its projecting portions 0 will pass through these two said channels. The key will then be forced into any one of the apertures b of the plate B for the purpose of locking the parts B and D to each other, whereby the upper sash may be locked in any desired open position by bringing the key into engagement with the different apertures of the plate B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sash-fastener, the casings D, E, said casing D, having a longitudinal groove 01, in the side thereof, and said casing E, havinga channel 6 in the bottom, and flanges (2, extending beyond the outer opening of said casin g bent downward at right angles thereto, said groove 61, and channel 6 registering with each other when said casings are attached to the frame and sash, and being adapted to permit the passage of a key 0, through said casings into the plate B, for locking the sashes, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 2d day of July,
WILLIAM S. GARDNER. lVitnesses:
O. O. WINGE, O. SEDGWICK.
