GEORGE \VASIIINGTON HADESTY, OF DRIFION, PENNSYLVANIA.
WEATHER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,102, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed February 11, 1886. Serial No. 191,618. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON HADEs'rY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drifton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Weather'Strips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs.-
My invention relates to improvements in weather-strips, having for its object the provision of an article of the class named having attachments whereby the strip fulfills the twofold function of weather-strip and door-lock.
To this and other ends the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts for service, substantially as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a doorprovided with myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a view of the bottom edge of a door detached from its frame and provided with my improvements. Fig. 3 isa vertical section on the line as m of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of my invention detached from the door.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts, A designates a door, connected, in the usual manner, by hinges a at one side of a door-frame, B, and provided with the usual latch operated by a knob, a.
C designates a groove formed in the lower end of the door, from side edge to side edge thereof, to receive a weather-strip, D, formed of a strip of rubber, (1, having a metallic case, (1, that incloses its sides and top.
E designates aslot formed in one side of the door, near its bottom, that extends to and opens into the groove 0.
F designates a plate or fiat bar of metal, provided at its upper end with a circular aperture, f, that is placed upon an eccentric, g, formed uponthe latch-bar g within the knob a. The bar or plate F extends downward to a point near the bottom of the door, upon the inner side thereof, and covers at its lower end he slot E, and is-provided at said lower end with pins or studs h k, that project from its opposite sides, as shown. One of the studs, 71, enters the slot E, and is rigidly secured to the weather-stri p D therein, and operates, when the knob is turned in one direction for the purpose of opening the door, to raise saidstrip from its engagement with a shoulder, j, or the usual threshold-strip upon the door-sill J, which, when the door is closed, operates, in connection with the strip D, as a lock for the door, at which time the strip is at its lowest point, as will be readily understood. The outer pin or stud, h, of the plate F is provided with a rubber cap, h", that operates as a stop for the door when it is opened.
The operation of my improvement is obvious, and requires no further explanation.
I claim- 1. In a combined weather-strip and lock, a door, A, having its lower end provided with a groove, 0, and slot E, in combination with a I Weatherstrip, D, consisting of a rubber plate,
d, and metal cap (1, plate or bar F, havingapertured upper end, eccentric 9 upon the latchbar 9, and knob a, substantially as described.
2. In a combined weather-strip and look, a plate or bar, F, having apertured upper end and outwardly-projecting studs or pins h h, the latter one of which is provided with a head or cap, h in combination with the doorknob and latch-bar 9', an eccentric, g, thereon, strip D, placed and operating in groove G, and slot E, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a vertically-moving weather-strip adapted to engage the shoulder j, or the usual thresholdstrip on the door-sill when thrown down, the bar F, connecting with the strip, the knob a, and the eccentric or cam connected to the knob and acting against the bar F, as set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
