To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALANSON CARY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have-invented new and useful Improvements in \Vindow- Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is mainly designed to be applied to windows having upper and lower sashes, either or both of which are made to rise and lower for the purpose of opening and closing the Window.
The improved fastener may either be used singly and occupy a central position relatively to the width of the window, when the window has a mullion through the center, or in duplicate on either side of it when the window is a large or wide one and without a mullion. lt is designed to take the place of those catches or fasteners which consist of a horizontallyswinging spring-controlled lever pivoted to the lower rail of the upper sash, and arranged to lock under or engage with a guard on the top rail of the lower sash. The invention consists in a fastenerot' novel construction in which a pendent pivoted locking-bar is used, and with which is or may be combined a finger-lever for operatingsaid bar, a frame-piece for carrying said devices and receiving the same within it, and a fixed plate or bar constructed to engage with the finger'lever when the locking-bar is adjusted in its locking position, substantially as hereinafter described.

Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved window fastener with its working parts adjusted into their locking position and with a turubutton applied to secure the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, transversely to the plane or face of the window, on the line at: a; in Fig. 3, showing the fastener as applied to certain portions (seen only in part) of the upper and lower sashes of a window, and as partly released from its lock or hold of the window; and Fig. 3, an elevation at right angles to Fig. 2, looking from the inside of the window.

Suitably secured, by screws or otherwise, within the stile A of the upper sash is an upright metal framepiece (3, having a vertical slot, 1), in it, and a recess, 0, in its face terminating abovein a finger notch, d. Suspended on an upper pivot, 0, within the slotted portion of this framepiece is a locking bar or lever, D, of suitable length when swung slightly outward to bear at its lower or free end on or immediately over the inner portion of the upper surface of the top rail, B, of the lower sash or plate fastened thereon, such' plate,
where one is used, being of any suitable form and size; but as here represented preferably made in the shape of a bar, 1*]. extending across the upper surface of the rail B, and let into and secured thereto, also formed with an upturned nose, 1'', for a purpose that will be hereinafter described. When the pivoted'bar or tongue Dis thus swung or adjusted over the inner end of the fixed bar or plate E, as shown in Fig. l, and partly so in Fig. 2, and which can only be done when the window is closed, the window is locked against being opened, and any attempt to lift the lower sash or to lower the upper sash is resisted by lower end-thrust ot' the pendent locking-bar D, the line of resistance being in direction of the length of said bar or tongue. This gives the fastener a very secure h-old upon the window, and it can only be released by forcing the bar D sufficiently back into the frame-piece O to allow of the rail B or plate thereon clearing it.
A convenient means for adjusting the swing ing locking-bar D in 01' out to bring its lower end over the bottom sash or out of the way of it, as required to lock or unlock the window, is provided as follows: G is a finger-lever pivoted at or near its one end, as at g, to and within the lower portion of the framepiece (3, so as to admit of being shut closely within said frame-piece and recess 0 there of. This lever G has a longitudinal slot, h, in it to allow of the bar or tongue D working through it, and when said lever is fully raised it shuts within the recess 0 in the frame-piece O, that,being countersunk in the Lot stile A and receiving the locking-bar D within it, thus presents a flush surface on the interior face of the stile A to permit of either sash freely sliding past the other. To operate the locking-bar D by the finger-lever G, said bar and lever are geared or connected with each other-as,for instance,by a pin, ion the lever arranged to pass through a longitudinal slot, 7c, in the locking bar or tongue. To lock .the window the end of the finger is inserted in the recess d of the frame-piece O, and the slotted lever G pressed downward out of its receiving-recess c and over the nosef on the outer end of the bar or plate E, which thus serves to bind the sashes laterally together, and provide against shake and to assist in securing the lock of the window by the bar D. This downward adjustment of the lever G brings the bar D outward and locks the window, and when it is required to open the window all thatis necessaryto be done istoswing the leverG backinto its recessc in the keeper or frame-piece O, and with and by it the lockingbar D is drawn into its recess or opening in said frame-piece.
A window-fastener constructed to operate as described presents but little or no opportunity to tamper with it from the outside, and, unlike the ordinary fastener, to which I have herein- .before referred, it cannot be pushed on one side by a knife-blade or other instrument inserted in and forced along the opening between the sashes, niyimproved fastener not opening by a. lateral action and presenting no purchase or hold for manipulating it from the exterior ,of thewindow, especially as the fingei lever G, which may fit tightly over the nosef, has also to be raised in order to work back the locking bar or tongueD. To give additional security, however, and to secure a positive or absolute lock of the window, I propose in some cases to combine with the plate E and slotted operating-lever G a turn-button, H, arranged to project upward from the plate and having its upper locking-head constructed so that when the button is turned into one position the slot in the lever G will receive in the open ing and closing of the fastener the head of the button through it, but so that after the fastener is closed, as in Fig. 1, and the button-head is turned into a position crosswise of the slot h, it will securely hold and lock the lever G down to its place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a window-fastening, the combination, with aslotted framepiece, and a pendent locking-bar pivoted in the slot-in said frame-piece, of a finger-lever pivoted to the lower end of the said frame-piece atg and engaging with the lower end of the said pendent locking-bar, to
move the same in and out of the slot, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a window-fastener, the combination, with the slot-ted frame-piece G, and the pendent locking-bar D, pivotedin the slot of said piece and having the slot 7c at its lower end, of the finger-lever G,pivoted to the lower part of the frame-piece and provided with the pin 2', working in the slot of the locking-bar, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a windowfastener, the combination, with thepivoted pendent locking bar or tongue D, and its slotted finger-lever G, of the plate E, provided with the nosef, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a window-fastener, the combination, with the pendentlocking bar or tongue D, and the slotted fingerlever G, of the plate E,provided with the nosef and the turn-button H, substantially as herein shown and des ribed.
5. In a window-fastener, the combination, with the pendent locking-bar 1), having its lower end slotted, of the finger-lever G, provided with the pin 2',working in the slot ofthe locking-bar, and with the slot h,to receive said bar, substantially as herein shown and de scribed.
