To all wwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in locks; and, the
invention relates, more particularly, to a novel sliding car Mdoor lock.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a sliding doorlock, which will be automatically actuated upon the closing' of i5 a door to which the same is attached, there by, preventing the opening of the door by unauthorized persons andV preventing loss of the car contents.
Among otheraims and objects of the 1nvention may be recited, the provision of a lock of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the constructionsimple, the cost of production small, and eciency and operation high. Y
The invention also includes a novel means, whereby, access to the lock, after the same has been moved into locking position, will be prevented, thus, defeating any attempts as may be made to tamper withjthe lock.
Other and further improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the description to followv which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof and wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown for the purpose of illustration.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, l have shown by way of illustration, the improved lock as applied to the conventional form of freight car, wherein a fragment of the car body is indicated by the numeral 2 and a fragment of the slidin door, by the numeral 1. i With more especia reference to the present improvements, there Specification of Letters Patent.

is arranged upon the car door 1, a substantially U-shaped bracket 3, the said bracket being secured in position by passing rivets or the like 4 through the adjacent leg portion thereof into the car door. rlhe outer end or leg portion of the bracket 3 is diagonally arranged, as indicated by the numeral 5 and has formed therein adjacent its lower eX- tremity, a bearing opening 6, the purpose of which will be presently apparent. A second diagonally positioned leg 7 A is aixed to the under face of the body portion of the bracket 3' and is arranged complemental to the leg portion 5, a suitable bearing opening being formed 'in the lower extremity thereof and preferably, in horizontal alinement with the bearing opening 6. A cylindrical element 8, having trunnions 9 formed upon the ends thereof is received between the'supporting legs 5 and 7, the trunnions 9, obviously, being inserted within the bearing openingsof the said leg portions. That trunnion, as adjacent the car door 1, is provided with a squared eXtension 10, whereby the same may be engaged with a suitable implement and the cylindrical element 8 thereby turned. i
To facilitate the passing of the implement through the car door 1 into engagement with the squared extension 10, an opening 11 is formed therein and is alined withthe said extension, thus, offering what may be termed a keyhole. A right angularly disposed arm 12 is formed upon the cylindrical element 8 and has its outer end bent at angles, to provide a catch 13, this catch serving as the locking means, whereby, the car door l-will be held in locked position. A depending leg 14- is formed upon the opposite side of the cylindrical element 8, preferably in alinement with the angularly disposed arm '12 and aords tripping means, whereby the said arm will be automatically actuated.
The car frame 2 has arranged upon the inner side thereof, adj aeent its forward end, a keeper plate 15 which has formed therein, intermediate its ends, an annular opening 16. rlhe rear end of the keeper late 15 Vis provided with an angularly bent eg 17, the leg serving as means whereby the keeper plate may be secured to the frame 2, by rivets 18 which are passed'therethrough into the said frame. lit will be noted upon reference tok Fig. 1,V that the keeper plate 15 projects for wardly of the adjacent marginal edge of the door H j With a view toward providing means whereby the opening or keyhole 11 may be guarded, that is, provided with means which will prevent the insertion of various implements therethrough in an effort to operate the catch 13, the cover plate 18 is pivotally connected with the outer side of the car door 1, as at 19 and carries upon its lower portion, an angularly disposed apertured lug 20, which, when in its lowermost position will aline with a similar lug 21, affixed to the 'car door by the fastening 22. Y' By so alining the apertured lugs 20 and 21, a wire 23 may be readily passed therethrough and the ends thereof engaged with a suitable form of seal, as is indicated by the reference character 24. By this means, an efficient anti-tampering device is afforded.
The operation of the construction may be reviewed as follows:
Assuming thatpthe car door 2 is in open position it is desired to close the same, it is of course moved laterally within its track ways as arranged within the freight car doorway.V As the same approaches its limits of lateral movement, the outer end of the keeper plate 15 will engage the depending leg 14, causing the cylindrical element 8 to be rotated, consequently, overbalancing the arm 12y and permitting the same to be swung downwardly, whereupon, the catch 13 will be engaged with the annular opening 16 in the keeper4 plate. Thus, reopening of the door will be prevented, that is, by merely applying a reverse push thereto. The cover plate 18 is now swung downwardly over the keyhole 11 and a sealing wire 23 passed through the alin'ed aperture lugs 20 and 21 and a seal ofsome sort engaged therewith. To open the door, the seal 24 is of course, brokenpand the cover plate 1S then swung upwardly from the keyhole 11. At this point, 'a suitable turning implement or key is inserted through the keyhole and the end thereof engaged with the squared eX- tension 10 of the adjacent tru'nnion of the cylindrical element 8, whereupon, it is f turned and causes the cylindrical element 8 to be rotated, hence, the arm 12 carrying the catch 13 to be raised into position as shown in the Fig. 1. When in raised position, the arm 12 will rest upon the adjacent marginal edge of the body portion 'of the bracket 3 and will remain so until Aagain' actuated by the keeper plate 15. The door 2 may now be readily slid to open position and the key removed from thel keyhole 11. i Y
Still further eY bodiments of the invention and the one herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. A door lock, including, in combination with a sliding door and a frame therefor, a
keeper carried by the frame and extending beyond the forward marginal edge thereof, a bracket secured to the inner side of the door and having a plurality of spaced apart diagonally disposed supporting legs formed thereon, a catch pivotally mounted between said supporting legs, a depending leg formed upon said catch, the catch being adapted to normally rest upon the body portion of the bracket when in inoperative position, 7 said. keeper enOaging Vthe depending leg when the door is slid to closed position, whereby, to cause the catch to be swung into locking engagement with the keeper, means arranged upon the catch for facilitating the engaging of a turning implement therewith for moving the same into unlocked position, and guard means arranged upon theouter side of the frame for preventing fraudulent operation of the catch.
2. A device of the class described, a conibination of a frame and a sliding door therefor, a bracket carried by said door, a catch pivotally mounted upon said bracket, a depending leg formed on said catch, an arm projecting from said catch and normally bearing on said bracket, whereby the movement of said catch will be limited in one direction, a keeper carried by said frame, said depending leg being attached to engage said keeper for preventing the movement of said door in one direction and means for facilitating the movement of said latch for swinging said leg from engagement with said keeper.
3. In a device of the class described, a combination of a frame having a sliding door, a keeper carried by said frame, a bracket secured to said door and having a plurality of spaced legs, a cylindrical shaft pivotally mounted upon said legs, a depending leg carried by said shaft, said depending leg being adapted to engage said keeper for holding said door against unauthorized movement, means for facilitating the tnrning of said shaft, and means for limiting the turning of said shaft in one direction.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame having a sliding door, a keeper carried by said frame, a bracket carried by said frame, a bracket carried by said door, said bracket having a plurality of spaced legs, a shaft having trunnions projecting therefrom, said trunnions being pivotally mounted upon said legs, a depending leg carried by said shaft, an angularly projecting arm carried by said shaft, said arm being adapted to engage said bracket for limiting the rotary movement of said shaft in one direction and said depending leg releasably engaging said keeper for holding the door against movement. y
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame having a sliding door, a keeper carried by said frame, a bracket Carried by said'frame, a bracket Carried by said door, said bracket having a plurality of spaced legs, a shaft having trunnions projecting therefrom, said trun nions being pivotally mounted upon said legs, a depending leg carried by said shaft, an angularly projecting arm Carried by said shaft, said arm being adapted to engage said bracket Jfor limiting the rotary movement of said shaft in one direction,
said depending leg releasably engaging said keeper for holding said door against movement and one of said trunnions being squared, whereby means may be attached thereto for turning said shaft;
