IMPROVEMENT in sneu-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,161, dated April 2, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in SelilAdjusting Sash-Holder and Lock, invented by WILLIAM WiLsoN AMOS, of Olathe, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for holding and locking windo\v-sashes, which shall be simple in construction, not liable to get out oi' order, will hold the sash securely at any desired point, will lock it when up or when down, and which may be readily applied to any sash, and will not disiigure the window; and itconsists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a metallic case or box, which is let into the sash, and which is made with a long flange,
af, upon its lower end, which extends along and is let into the edge of the sash. The case A a is secured in place by one or more screws passing through the outer end of the ilange a', and into the sash. To the sides of the case A are pivoted the ends of the two shafts B, to receive the rubber rollers C, and `which are made with longitudinal flanges, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to prevent the said rubber rollers (l from turning upon the said shafts B. D are metallic washers placed upon the shafts B at the ends of the rubber rollers C, to prevent the ends of the said rubber rollers from being worn by the boXAand ratchet-wheelsE. E are ratchet-wheels, one of which is attached to one end of each of the shafts B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of the sh ai'ts B, to which the ratchet-wheels E are attached, are made triangular, square, or of other polygonal shape, to lit into a similarlyshaped hole formed in the centers of the ratchet-wheels, so that the ratchet-wheels, when held stationary, may prevent the shafts B and rollers C from re volving. F is a spring-bar, which is attached at its center to the box A in an inclined position, so that its ends, upon which are formed -the sash is being raised.

The ratcliet\vheels E and springpawl bar F should be so arranged as to hold the rollers from being turned bythe friction ofthe windowj amb when the sash is being lowered, and allow them to be turned freely by said friction when rEhe recess in the sash-rail, in which the box or case A and its attachments are placed, is made deeper than the depth ofsaid box, and in the space thus formed is placed one or more springs, G, of sufficient strength to cause the sash to be sustained in any position by the friction between the rollers (l and the window-jamb. In the sash-rail beneath the flange a of the box Ais formed an inclined recess, in the shallowest part of which is secured a spring, H, the free end of which is forked to receive the lockingbolt I, which passes through the sash-rail from its inner to its outer side through a tube, J, inserted in said sash-rail, as shown in Fig. l. The forward end of the bolt-I projects at the outer edge of the sasli-rail, to enter a hole in the window-jamb when the sash is closed or when it is fully opened. The forward end of the bolt I-I rests against and slides along the windowjamb as the sash is being raised and lowered. In the sides of the bolt I are formed notches, as shown in Fig. l, so that the spring H and bolt I can be so adjusted that the forward end of the said bolt Ina-y be held projecting to any desired distance, or entirely within the sashrail, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the box A, rubber rollers C, ratchet-wheels D, springpawl bar F, and spring or springs G, substantially as here in shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
