Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS L. NORTHUP, OF OLNEYVILLE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,636, dated March 14, 1876; application filed February 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs L. N OETHUP, of Olneyville, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful lImprovements in Sash Locks and Supporters, of which the following is a specication The nature oi' my invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts, the case oi' the sash-fastener being so constructed as to enable me to insert itin the sash with less expense of time and labor and mutilation of the sash, than with those ordinarily in use; also, in so constructing the ordinary cam-lever that when the sash is closed it latches into and behind a properlyconstructed lock-plate fixed in the jamb, and securely locks the sash, and also the construction of the said lock-plate so that it will receive and engage with the cam-lever, as hereinafter more fully described, and deinitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like letters indicate like parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a detached View of a case having parallel sides A A and circular ends B B, with the grooves b b. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of said case, showing it in its position in the sash, and carrying the cam-lever C, and spring D; the lockplatc is also shown in section at E. Fig. 3 more fully shows the slot c d, in the lock-plate E, to receive the camlever C. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the sash through the line ej'.
The onse A A is cast in one piece, or for convenience in molding and to avoid drilling for the pin of the cam-lever O, it may be made in halves with sockets for the hubs of the cani-lever O, on each side, and be suitably fastened together. By means of the parallel l sides and circular ends A A and B B, said case may be inserted in the sash, by simply boring two holes the proper depth and distance apart, and cleaning out the intermediate chip. The screws at each end in the grooves b b, by impinging partly on the Wood and partly on the case, prevent the same from working out of its position.
When the sash is at its lowest point, the
spring D, by resting against the bar g, forces the cam end of the lever O into and through the slot c d in the lock-plate E, so that any attempt to raise the sash without lifting directly on the end h of the cam-lever U causes the projections 'i 'i on the cam end to engage with and hold onto the projections c c of the slot c d. In order to unlock and raise the sash the cam-lever must, by pressure on the end h, be brought into the position indicated by the broken line in Fig. 2.
I am aware that the use of a cam-lever in combination with a spring acting upon it, as a device for supporting Window-sash, is not new, in such cases the sash being usually locked by the spring engaging directly with a plate fixed in thejamb but What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination, the case A A, h aving parallel sides and circular ends, cam-lever C, spring D, and lock-plate E, all substantially as shown and described, for the purposesset forth.
jamb, substantially as shown and described,
for the purpose set forth.
