Beit known that I, J.L. CHAMBERS, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York,

have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tablet-Locks for Mnil-l3ags, Freight Gars, &c.; and I` do hereby declare that tl1 cr following isa full, clear, andexact description ot' the same, reference being hadto the annexed drawings,` and to the letters of referenceV marked thereon` mnking part of this specification, in whichv i Figure 1 .is a-plan.view of thc lock, the face-plate being removed, as well as the tumblers and main boit, onlyI leaving thatportionof the mechanism which is permanently attached to the bottom of the case.

lThe nature of my invention consists in constructing a lock with two independent bolts, which are so arranged that theyaet together, simultaneously locking both the h'asp and the bottom lock, said bolts being operated by a series of` tumblers, which are worked by means of a ilat key. f j

My invention also consists in constructing a tablet-lock. On the face of the lock, by-means of flanges, having projecting lips or other equivalent device, I arrange a suitable frame to receive the tablet. Three sides of this frame are permanently secured to the face of the lock, while the bottom is slotted, in order to allow of the free insertion and withdrawal of the tablet, as occasion may require. The slot in the lower portion .of the tablet-frame is entirely closed, by means ofthe bottom of the lock, so thatwhen the lock is fastened the tablet is permanentlyI secured in position, and cannot be interfered or tampered with until the lock 'is again unfastened, which removes the bottom-of the'lock from the slot, leaving the latter perfectly free.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I'wiil proceed to describe its con-- struction and operation. i v

A is the lock-case, which is constructed in the usual manner. To the easeA is secured the hasp Jl The hasp .I is furnished with a slot, .7', which receives the main bolt, which secures the hasp when the lock is fastened.v To the bottom of the case A is permanently attached -the boss E. The lower portion of this boss E is perfectly straight, and serves as avguide for the lower bolt C, which works between the boss E and inner easing A. On this holt C there is a'lraised ledge, c, by means of which the bottom I is held in -position when-the lock is fastened, the bottom I being provided with a hasp or catch, t', through which passes the ledge c. This bottom plate I is firmly secured to the lock, and is furnished .with a small spring, o, the object of which is to throw the bottom I out of position the moment the lock is unfastened. To the bottom of the case A, by means of the pivot-bolt d, is attached the hasp-dog or check D. This pivot-bolt d projects su'iciently far above the dog D to furnish a suitable bearing for the unattached endr of the springs Z, which are secured tothe tumblers F. The cheek or dog D is provided with a recess, 71, so arranged as to receive the boss b', which is on the main bolt B. Motion is impartedto the dog D by means ofthe spring d', one end of which is permanently attached to the dog, while the free end rests against the upper portion of the boss E. On the upper face of the boss E there: is a stump,

This main bolt B is provided with a boss, Z1', as already stated, which rests in the recess L when the lock is unfastened, but whose projecting head enters the slotj when the lock is'fastened, and securely holdsthe hasp J. It will be observed that a. space only suicientto allow of the free action of the bolt B is left between its upper edge and the lock-case. The object of this is, if an attempt should be made to force the hasp when the lock is fastened, the bolt will be b'rought in contact with the case, thus freeing the bolt of much of the strain, transferring the same to the case. There is attached to the main bolt I3 a spring, lc, the free end of which rests against the side of the case. The tendency-of this spring is to retain thcbolts in a closed condition until'sueh time as the tumblers are acted upon by the key K. The main 70eme bolt B is also provided with a catchfchcele, lI1, anda slot, g. y In this slot g enters and works the stump a', which is secured to the upper head of the bolt C, and by means of which, acting on a principle similar to the cam, an

alternating motion is imparted to the bolt C,`the direction of whose action is by this means'invariabl-y con# trolled by and is simultaneous with the action of the main bolt B. F FF are tuinblers, which nre attached to and revolve upon the pin j", which is secured-...to the bottom of the case A. These tumblers are each provided with a spring, e, one end of which is'irnnlyattached, 'to the tumbler, Vwhile the other end rests against the bolt d. The position of these tumblers, exceptwhenected upon by the key, as well as the entire mechanism, is as shown in fig. 3. On the face-plate of the lock there4 are formed ythree anges, one at the top'und one on each side, leaving the bottom open. On these flanges resttheframe m, projectingvsutiieiently far lto form, as it were, inner lips to the langes.- This frame'm also projects sufficiently far ovcrthe lower end of the lock to completely `cover the bottom plate when the lock is fastened. By means of the lslot between the frame and the face-plate, the tablet 'l can readily be inserted and withdrawn. But so soon as the lock is fastened, the bottom plate I completely closes the slot, and renders it impossible to interfere with the tablet, unless the look be opened.

The operation of' my invention is as follows: I use "a flat key, c, of the form shown in fig. 9. 'ihe tablet T being inserted, as shown in figs. land 5, the key enters the hole z', and isvbrought in immediate contact with thc tumblers, which are forced until the catch-check Ab'has entered the slotf of each tumbler; the main bolt 13 is then moved, which gradually withdraws the bolt-Ahead out of the slot j, and at the same time, by means ot the slot g and stump c, forces the bolt C back, which withdraws the flange c on the bolt' C out of the slot z' of the bottom I. As soon as the bolt-head of the main bolt B, and theuflange c of the-lower bolt C are free of the slotsj and I of the hasp J and vbottom plate I, the recoil of the'spring d', attached' to theutlog-"D, for'eesthe dog .against the hasp with sutlicent force to drive the hasp entirelyclear of the opening a,.while at the same time the spring o throws the bottom plate I entirely outfot' its former position, as clearly shown niig. 1, when the tablet can be withdrawn and reversed, or-a. new one inserted, as occasionmay require.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I f 1. Constructing a lock with two independentbolts, which are so arranged as to act together, simultaneously locking both the hasp and bottom plate ofthe lock, said bolts being operated by a series of tumblers, which are worked by means of a fiat key, substantially as described.

2. Securely locking the tablet in position by means of the bottom plate I, substantially as described. In testimonywhereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
