VV'ILLIAM H. MURPHY, 0I" VERSAILLES, O H10.
Letters Patent No. 68,527, dated ySepem-5m' 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLOGKS, tei
@Le ,segnale marsh tu in 1152s #attimi @tout imi making part-nt tige time.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY C ONOERN:
Be it known that I, IV. H. MURPHY, of Versailles, in the county of Darke, and State of-Ohio, haveinvented.
vanew and useful Improvement in Locks, and that the following description, takenin connection with the aecompanying drawings, hereinafter'referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of n. similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The present invention relates to a novel arrangement of parts within the easing of the lock, and of their connection with the bolt, whereby, to withdraw or to draw in the bolt, a. certain combination of movements must be performed with the key that are of such a nature as toconfuse and blind, as it were, those persons unfamiliar with the same, and thus, in that respect, servingas a safeguard against the unlockingr of the lock, except by those having authority and instructed so to do. In the accompanying plateot` drawings my improvement in locks is illustrated- Figure 1 being a view of the inside ot' the lock-casing, showing its working parts.
Figure 2,al 'transverse section through the lock-casing, `in plane of line :v x,vfig. 1.
i Figures Slandl, views ofthe key to the lock.
A, in the drawings, represents the casing' or box to the lock, whicli, in the present instance, is made of a shape similar to the casing, el` the ordinary padlocks. '13, the shackle or link-bar, hung to casing A at ono end so as to enter by its other end, C, the lock-casing, where, through a spring-holt, D, arranged to slide in suitable guides, E, thereof, it is locked and held. F, a lever, hung at one end to upper side of bolt I). This lever entendsl toward the hey-hole of the loelc, and at such end is made of a wedge shape, with a 'llange or lip, G, upon each side, and in position for the key II to lock when properly inserted therein to come to a bearing against them, as and for a purpose to behereinafter stated. I, a lip on one side 'of lever F, by which lip the said lever is engaged with and under thceatch-piece or staple, J, forming a part of the bol-t to the lock. K, a bent or bow-shaped spring, iixed at one end to side ofilock-casing A, and at its other hung by a. slot, L, upon a stud or pin, M, of the bolt-lever F.
I With a lock having the lever attachment to its bolt above described, to unlock the lock insert the hey therein, when, lturning it to the left, nt the same time slightly ,pushing it inward, the lever Fis swung to thc left, to a position against the stop-piece N, when, continuing to hold the lever down, allow it to swing slightly back to the right until it locks itself by its lip I withthe catch J', to the bolt, which 'being done, then draw out the key suciently to clear the lever, over which swing it to the left, when, bringing it to bear against such side of the lever/turn or swing the key to the right, which causes the bolt to be drawnor movediinwardpas is obvious, and thusto be released from the shackle or link-bar. In the locking ofthe lock the bolt is self-acting, and when thus locked the lever is thrown out of connection-with thebolt catch-piece, so as to deceive or confuse any person attempting to unlock the lock who is notfamiliar with the construction' or mode of operating the key. i i
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The ieverF, in combination with bolt D,V when both are constructed, arranged, and hung together substantially as and for the purpose described.
i WM. H. MURPHY.
Witnesses JOHN MURrnr, SIMON MURPHY.
