Letters Patent No. 63,467, dated April 2, 1867.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCER-N:
Be it known that I, IRA D. BUSH, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use thc same, reference bei-ng had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
The present invention -consists principally in a novel arrangement of a sliding link or bolt within the lockcase and projecting from opposite sides of the same, \\hereby,when the link or bolt is unlocked and slid forward, it may be hooked into or interiocked with a staple or eye, and when so hooked may be drawn o; moved hack :ind secured within the lock-case by means of a bolt or other fastening, as will be hereinafter more fully described. i
Figure 1 0f the drawings is a View of the inside of a lock made according to the present invention; and
Figure 2, a viev of the front or key-plate of the lock-easing.
A, in the drawings, represents the casing or box for the locking devices, which casing, in the present instance, is made of a square shape, but may be made of other and various shapes. B the bolt or link of the lock, made of a square-shaped bar, bent over at each end into a semicircular shape, so as to bring the two ends of the bar opposite to each other, with a space or opening, C. This bolt B is arranged withinthe lock-casing Aso as to slide through it from one side to the other, projecting by its semicircular-shaped ends from each side of the same. D a stop secured within the lock-casing A in proper position for the end E of the link or bolt-bar B to rest upon, the other end, F, of the said bolt-bar coming `to a stop against a spring-bolt, G, arranged within the lock-casing in a suitable position therefor and so ras to slidel across the length or piane of movement o f the linkbolt moving in and between suitable ways or guides H secured to the `inside of the lock-casing.
When the slidingmbolt is across the end F of the linkbol't and the 'other end of such bolt at a rest upon or against the stop D, as is plainly shown in the drawings, fig. l, it is apparent that the link-'bolt cannot be moved within the lock-casing, but, as it were, is fixed in position and locked, to unlock or relieve which it is only necessary to slide back the bolt G by the use of a suitable key therefor, when the link-bolt can be moved or slid in the lock-casing in a direction toward .its upper side, bringing one of its looped or circular-shaped ends free from the casing and in :position for being engaged with a staple or eye, or their equivalents, upon which it may be locked by simply sliding the bolt back into the lock into the position shown in iig.- l, when the sliding bolt G, by the action of its spring, locks and' secures it, ,as'is obvious Without any further explanation.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the sliding link-bolt B, stop D, and locking bolt G, or their respective equivalents, when arranged together and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
` IRA D. BUSH. Witnesses:
E. BENHAM, F. C. ADAMsoN.
