To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, HERBERT G. SOULE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinton, in the county of Plymouth, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to looks and has particular reference to the type of lock which is associated with sliding bolts such as may be associated with swinging or sliding doors.
This invention has for its purpose to provide a lock of simplified and compact construction by means of which doors may be securely fastened by the'lockin ofa sliding fastening bolt, rather than by the projection of a bolt.
The invention may be employed upon barns, garages, or any other building structure, or it may be adapted for use upon freight cars, and the arrangement of parts is such that the lock will stand hard usage without being broken or the parts becoming weakened and disarranged.
WVith the above, and other objects, in view, as will hereinafter appear my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my lock construction, the rear plate having been removed from the casing, Fig. 2 is an elevation, showing the relationship of the lock and the locking bolt, as applied to a door, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the latch bolt, Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a locking pin, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a slide plate used in my invention.
Referring more particularly to said drawings, 1 represents a casing of suitable construction, and provided with the lugs 2 for securing the casing to a door or building where it may be desired to use the lock. Said casing is provided with a longitudinal recess 3 of considerable depth llIl which operates a latch bolt 4, which is best illustrated in Fig. 3. Said latch bolt is provided with a transverse recess 5 which operates opposite a corresponding bolt receiving recess 6 formed in the side of the casing 1. A shoulder 7 formed at one side of the recess 5 isshaped to-engage a notch d in the locking bolt 9 when the latter is passed through the bolt receiving recess 6 and through the recess 5. The head 10 of the bolt 9 rests within a correspondingly shaped recess 11 when the locking bolt is projected into locking position. The latch bolt 4 is provided at or near one end witha V-shaped notch or recess" 12 which is engaged by the correspondingly shapedfinger 13 of a tumbler- 14 said tumbler 14 is pivoted upon a stud 15 within the recess 16. The rear end of the tumbler 14 is shaped or recessed as at 17 to be actuated by a key of suitable design. Tumblers of various shapes may be provided, in order to be used by keys of a variety of shapes. The opposite portion of the casing 1 is provided with a slot 18 in which is mounted a locking pin 19. Said locking pin 19 consists of an elongated shank 20 and a head 21, said head engaging in one or the other of a pair of notches 22 and 23, formed in the latch bolt 4, depending upon the positionof the latter. The rear end of the shank 20 operates between a pair of guides 24, and a coil spring 25 threaded upon said shank and bearing between the head 21 and the guides 24 normally presses the locking pin 19 into on gagement with the latch bolt 4.
The casing 1 is closed by a back plate 26, said back plate being shaped to cover the lugs 2, and is thus bolted in position with the casing 1 when the lock is secured to the side of a building.
In mounting the lock for securing a door, the casing is bolted or otherwise fastened to the side of the building or other structure, in line with the locking bolt v9, which is slidably carried in a pair of slide plates 27 mounted upon the door al In order to lock the door, the latter having been closed, the bolt is projected from the slide plates 27 to engage the recess 6. A key may then be employed to throw the tumbler 14 whereby the latch bolt 4 is thrown into engagement with the notch 8 of the locking bolt 9. The door is then locked in closed position. It will be understood that the lock may also be mounted upon a sliding door, the engagement of the shoulder? with the notch 8 of the locking bolt 9 preventing the retraction of the bolt, and consequently the sliding of the door when the key has been turned in the lock. 0
Opposite the free edge of the door in its open position, that is, when it has been swung back against the Wall is secured a slide plate 28. The slide plate 28 is provided with a slide member 29 which is spaced from the wall a sufficient distance to be engaged by the bolt 9 when the door is swung back against the wall of the building.
The operation of my improvement having been clearly defined in the course of the above description, further mention thereof is not deemed necessary.
When the bolt 9 is engaged in the plates 27, the pins 30 are threaded into the bolt, one in its front face and the other in its rear face, the door being longitudinally slotted to permit the pin on the rear face to project therethrough in operative relation. Said pins 30 also act as stops to limit the movement of the bolt 9 in the plates 27, and to prevent its retraction therefrom.
hat I claim is 1. A lock comprising in combination with a bolt having a notched locking head, a casing having a transverse recess into which said head may slidably seat, a latch-bolt slidable across said recess, said latch bolt being recessed to permit the passage of said head and the notch in the latter being positioned to receive said bolt, a tumbler for reciprocating said bolt, and a pin resiliently seated in said casing and positioned to engage in either of a pair of notches formed in said latch-bolt to hold the latter in locking or unlocking position.
2. A look comprising in combination with a bolt having a notched locking head and supported in slideways, a casing having a transverse recess into which said head may be projected, a latchebolt slidable transversely of said bolt and having a recess coincident with the recess in the casing for receiving said locking head, said latch-bolt being adapted to slide into locking engagement with the notch in said head, a key 0perated tumbler for actuating said latch-bolt and a resiliently mounted pin for locking said bolt in locking or open position.
