To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM EARL SNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Natoma, inthe county of Osborne and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in looks for sliding doors.
An object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and effective lock which, when placed on a sliding door will securely lock the same, the keeper passing within the lock to prevent access thereto, thereby preventing it from being unlocked except by the use of the proper key.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the improvement, Fi 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
While the improved lock is primarily designed for employment upon the sliding doors of freight cars, it is to be understood that the same may be employed with equal oiliciency in other connections, as for in stance, upon the sliding doors of passenger cars, mills, factories, etc, and in the accompanying drawing, the numeral 1 designates a sliding member and 2 a stationary member.
In the illustrative embodiment of the drawings, the stationary member 2 has secured thereto a keeper member 3, the same having its end projecting inwardly of the door opening, and this end is formed with a hooked nose a. j
The main body of the casing of the improved lock may be let into a suitable mortise in the end of the door which abuts with the stationary member 2 and the outer or cover plate of the casing is provided with lugs or extending portions which project 1 over the casing and which has suitable covering plate, for the reception of securing elements, the said securing elements lying flush with the said covering plate. The lock casing preferably comprises a substantially rectangular member having its edges flanged, and the lower flange formed with an angular extension 6 which terminates in a straight wall 7. The extension 6 is arranged opposite the opening 8 through which the keeper is adapted to pass and the sliding member 1 is brought into contact with the stationary member 2. The straight wall 7 of the extension 6 is adapted to serve as an abutment or stop member for the con tral or body portion 9 of a latch 10, the said latch beingrecessed to receive the straight wall and the rear angular wall of the said extension. The latch has its rear end formed with an opening through which passes a pivot stud 11, and also secured to the said rear wall is one end of a spring 12, the opposite ends of said spring being connected with the rear flange of the casing, as at 13, and the said spring is adapted to swing the latch upon its pivot 11 to bring the same into contact with the extension 6 and the straight wall 7 thereof. The opposite or outer end of the pivoted latch may contact 7 with the inner wall of the outer flange of the casing and the same is provided with a downwardly extending rounded hook or nose let which is disposed opposite the opening 8 so that when the movable member 1 is brought into contact with the stationary member 2 the hooked nose 1 of the staple contacting with the outer rounded surface of the nose 14 of the pivoted latch will swing the said latch until the straight portion of the hook 4i engages with the straight wall of the hook or nose, 14 of the latch.
The pivoted latch opposite the recessed portion thereof which rests upon the straight wall 7 of the extension 6 is formed upon its opposite side with depressions 15, the front walls of which being substantially straight and the rear walls curved, as indicated by the numeral 16. Pivoted within these depressions is the bifurcated curved end 17 of a tumbler 18. The upper or opposite end of the tumbler is formed with a head 19 which has a plurality of kerfs 20 adapted to be received in the wards of a suitable key, and the weighted headed end of the tumbler is adapted to swing the same against the curved walls of the depressions to retain the tumbler in proper position to be engaged by the bit of the key and will when disengaged bv the key return to'its initial position. When the tumbler is forced upwardly by the key the pivoted latch will have its nosed end swung. to bring the same out of engagement with the hooked endof the keeperto permit of the opening of the-door.
From the above description, taken in connecticn with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as theadvantages thereof will, it. is thought, he
perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A bolthaving one of its ends pivoted 1 casingl An' ovable'ele'ment and a stationary element providing an abutment for the movable element, a hooked staple upon one of the elements and projecting over the other element, said casing having its edges flanged and one of its said flanges cut to provide an opening for the hooked end of the keeper, the lower horizontal flange having an angular extension terminating in a horizontally straight surface, a latch pivoted at one end within the casing, said-latch having its lower face formed with a depression to engage with the extension of the casing, spring means for forcing the latch in such contact, the outer end of the latch contacting with the outer flange of the casing above the opening therein, and the latch being pro-s,v
vided at the said end with .a downwardly inproximity to the latch opening'of the casing.
