APPLICATION FILED FEB.24,19I5.

ANDREI OLTEAN, OF MOHAWK, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nted Jan. 29, 1918.
Application filed February 24, 1915. Serial No. 10,294.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANDREI OLTEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mohawk, in the county of Keweenaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved door lock and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to efiect improvements in the construction of a lock of this character whereby the locking bolt may be caused to move to locking position by the use of a single key but whereby two keys will be required to be turned in order to move the bolt to unlocking position.
Another object is the provision of a lock of this character having a bolt engaging detent mounted for sliding movement in guides so arranged that one of them will operate as a stop for preventing complete rotation of the releasing key.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device with one plate or side wall of the case removed so as to disclose the latching and locking bolts and also the detent, the knob spindle being shown in section, and the locking bolt being shown in looking position, the key for actuating the detent being also indicated.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the looking bolt in unlocking position and indicating the two keys required to thus move the locking bolt.
The lock case 1 may be of any suitable form and construction and is provided with a removable plate forming one side wall thereof. A latching bolt 3 is mounted for longitudinal movement in a horizontal guideway 4 with which the case is provided, is beveled at its outer end on one side as at 5 and is provided at its inner end with a reduced stem, 6. A coiled extensile spring 7 is arranged in the inner end of the guide- Way 4 and With its outer portion around the stem and bearing against the inner end of the latch bolt said spring to normally project the latching bolt as will be understood. A spindle 8 carrying the usual knobs is provided for actuating the latch. These parts may be of any well known or referred type and are described as forming part of a com plete lock of the type commonly used having separate latch and bolt mechanism.
The lock bolt 26 operated in a guide 27, is normally moved to locking position by a spring 28 and is provided on one side with a pair of notches 29, 30 and also with an abutment 31. A detent 32 is also provided Which is arranged at right angles to the lock bolt and is mounted for reciprocating movemcntin a guideway 33 formed by a pair oi. spaced and parallel ribs 33 and 33 on. the lock casing. A spring 34: arranged between said ribs projects the said detent and engages its outer end 35 which extends beyond the ribs with the notch 29, or the notch 30, of the lock bolt as the case may be, thus causing the said detent to hold the lock bolt in locked or in unlocked position as will be understood. This detent is adapted to be disengaged from the lock bolt by a suitable key 35 which maybe inserted in the lock case through a suitable key hole 36 to cause the bit of the key to engage a shoulder on the detent underlying said spring. It will be noted that the shoulder of the detent extends transversely a slight distance beyond the longitudinal center of the detent and that the bit of the key exerts its initial outward pressure on the shoulder directly in line with the path of movement of the detent and in line with the longitudinal center of the detent, hence there is no torsional pressure exerted initially on the detent such as would cause it to bind against its guides. If the key is turned sharply its first contact with the detent will exert a sufficient pressure to throw the detent from engagement with the locking bolt 26 and therefore, there is no probability of the detent jamming which is an important feature of the lock. Assuming that the lock bolt is in unlocked position, with the-detent 32 engagedv with the notch 29, all that is necessary in order to move the lock bolt to locking position is to use the key 35 for moving the detent 32 out of engagement with the notch 29, thespring 28 then acting to shoot the bolt, and the detent 32 is then caused by the action of the spring 34 to engage the notch 30 and thus secure the bolt in locked position. In order to release the bolt the key 35' must be employed to disengage the detent 32 from the notch 30 and a second key 38 must then be employed to engage the abutment 31 and move the lock'bolt inwardly against the tension of its spring 28, a key hole 39 being provided in the lock case for the action of the second key.
It will be noted that an important feature is the action of the rib 33 as a stop in addi' .tion to its function as a guide. WVhen the key 35" is engaged with the detent 32 and turned to retract it from the notch 2-9 or 30, the bit of the key will engage the end of the rib 33 when the detent has been fully retracted, thereby are venting the key from being turned entirely around.
Vhile I have shown herein and described a preferred form of my invention, 1 would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportions and c0nstruction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the scope of the subj oined claim.
cut-away portion with the vertex of the an- I gle rounded, and a key having its bit engageable Within the cut-away portion of said detent whereby said detent may be retracted, one of said rib-s serving as a stop for the bit of said key when said detent is in its retracted position. 7
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
