rinrrnn STATES PATENT orrrcn WALTER LOUCZYNSKI, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. October 6, 1911, Serial No. 653,187. Renewed October 19, 1912. Serial No. 726,805.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER LOUCZYNSKI, a subject of the Emperor of AustriaI-Iungary, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to looks, especially designed for sliding doors and the primary object of my invention is to provide a mortise lock of simple and durable construction, the lock containing comparatively few parts that are easily assembled and manipulated to release a door.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a door frame with a concealed latch adapted to engage a keeper carried by a door.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lock, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same.
The reference numeral 1 designates a door frame having a mortise or recess 2 to accommodate a rectangular metallic casing 3 having a side wall 4. The end wall 5 of the casing 3 has an opening 6 to provide clearance for a beveled keeper 7, carried by a face plate 8 secured to the edge of the door 9 by screws 10 or other fastening means. The plate 8 is counter-sunk in the door 9 and said door is arranged to move or slide back and forth relatively to the frame 1.
The casing 3 opposite the strike plate 5 has a yoke 11 extending into a groove 12 provided therefor at the inner end of the mortise 2. Extending through the yoke 11 are bolts 13 arranged in an opening 14 provided therefor transversely of the frame 1, said bolts having nuts 15 holding said bolts in engagement with said frame, whereby the casing 3 will be locked within the mortise 2. The casing 3 has bosses 16 to receive screws 17 employed for retaining a closure plate 18 in engagement with the casing, and said closure plate has a slot 19 registering with a slot 20 in the frame 1.
The side wall 4: has a central boss 21 and pivotally connected to said boss by a pin 22 is a latch 23. One end of the latch is bent downwardly, as at 24 to engage the keeper 7 and the opposite end thereof is bent outwardly to provide a handle 25 that extends through the slots 19 and 20. Engaging the upper side of the latch 23, adjacent to the downwardly bent end thereof is a fiat spring 26 secured to the inner side of the casing 3, said spring holding the latch 23 normally in engagement with the keeper 7 To limit the movement of the latch 23 and hold said latch whereby it will remain in position to ride into engagement with the keeper 7, the wall 4: of the casing 3 hasa stop pin 27 engaging said latch adjacent to the handle thereof. By depressing the handle 25 the latch is moved out of engagement with the keeper 7 and the door 9 can be opened.
In arranging the yoke 11 at the inner end of the casing 3, the door frame 1 is not weakened by bolts or other fastening means passing through the lock casing to retain said casing in the mortise 2.
The lock in its entirety is made of light and durable metal and can be used in connection with various structures.
What I claim is A look comprising a casing adapted to be arranged in the mortise of a door frame, a yoke projecting from the inner end of the casing and adapted to extend into the door frame, and bolts arranged transversely of the door frame and extending through said yoke for retaining the casing in the mortise of said frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER LOUCZYNSKI.
