SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,434, dated June '7, 1892.

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. WEsrBERc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in door-bolts, the object being to provide an eiiicient and durable door-bolt of simple and inexpensive construction.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter t'ully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figures 1 and 2 are plan views with the top ot' the case removed and showing the parts in the locked and unlocked positions. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken, respectively, on the lines 3 3 and 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings,Aindicates the case containing the bolt-operating mechanism. Bis the sliding bolt-shank, having bolt 1 at one end located within an opening in the end of the case A. The said bolt-shank slides between an abutment 2 and a guide 3, located within the case. The bolt is moved back and forth by means of an arm 4, pivoted to an abutment 5 within the case. The outer end of said arm is located between two shoulders G and 7 upon the bolt-shank B, so that as the said arm is turned upon its pivot by its engagement with either of said shoulders 6 and 7 it will move the bolt back and forth. The said arm 4 is provided with a hub 8, located within a circular opening' in abutment 5, while the interior of said hub is squared and receives the squared end 9 of a key 10, by means of which the arm is turned upon its pivot. The said key extends through the side of the case and is provided with a suitable handle 11.
Between the abutments or guides 2 and 5 a sliding spring-actuated tumbler 12 is located, and a recess 13 is made in the side of the boltshankB to receive said tumbler when the bolt is shot. The said tumbler is provided with a shoulder or projection 14, that is located in the path of a finger 15, projecting from the arm 4 when said bolt is shot, and said tumbler engages the recess 13 in the bolt-shank, as shown in Fig. 1. It is of course obvious that various kinds of springs could be employed to operate said tumbler; but as a convenient construction I employ a plate-spring 1G, that presses against the lower end of said tumbler and is held at its ends by lugs 17 on the interior of the case A.
In Fig. 1 the bolt is shown as shot, with the tumbler 12 in engagement with the recess 13 of the bolt-shank and the projection 14 on said shoulder located in the path of finger 15. When the key 10 is turned,the finger 15 first engages the projection 14 on the tumbler and moves it against the spring action until its end is withdrawn from the recess 13, whereupon the linger becomes disengaged from said projection 14, and the end of the arm 4 engages the shoulder 7 and slides the bolt-shank and bolt back, while the tumbler presses against the lower face of the bolt-shank, and the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2. In shooting the bolt the key is turned in an opposite direction and the arm 4'engages the shoulder 6 of the bolt-shank and shoots the bolt, while the iinger is moved past the projection 14 to the position shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the recess 13 is located opposite the end of the tumbler and the spring will press the latter therein.
It will of course be understood that the case can be secured to the side of the door or can be arranged after the manner of a morv tise-lock.
I claim as my invention- A door-bolt comprising a case, a freelysliding bolt and bolt-shank located therein and coni-ined by suitable guides, two shoulders or projections on said shank, an arm pivoted upon said case and having one end located between said shoulders or projections on said shank, whereby said bolt and shank can be moved back and forth by the engagement of said end of the arm with either of said shoulders or projections,a freelysliding tumbler located in guides upon the case, a spring acting upon said tumbler and serving IOC) to hold the same at all times against the bolt- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in shank, a recess in said bolt-shank located to presence of two Witnesses. receive said tumbler when the bolt is shot,
