A. ANGUS. DOOR BOLT.
No. 517,512. Patented Apr. 3, 1894.
ALEXANDER ANGUS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DOOR-BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,512, dated April 3, 1894.
Application filed June 12, 1893. SerialNo. 477,369. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it'may concern.-
l 3e it known that I, ALEXANDER ANGUS, a c t zen of the United States of America, reslding at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Door- B olts, of which the'following is a specificatlon, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. r
Myinvention relates to door bolts; and conslst in providing a novel form of actuating lever for throwing the bolt, and the means for locking the bolt in position when thrown in either direction. 0 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, 1s a longitudinal elevation of my improved bolt showing it as it will appear when attached to a door. Fig. 2, is a like view showlng the reverse side of the bolt. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section taken just above the bolt and looking at the edge.
Referring to the several parts by letters of reference, A indicates the bolt plate which is provided with an angular projection A at one end, to fit on the edge of the door, and form a guide for the bolt. The plate is also provided with a raised portion B, upon which the bolt rests, and against which it is held by means of a spring C which is secured to thebridge C. The rear end of the bolt is provided with a lug D, which engages with one of the two openings (1 d formed in the plate A. The raised part of the plateB is recessed at B on the opposite side from the bolt, and in this recess is pivoted a lever E, one end of which forms a finger catch to raise it out of the recess in the plate, and the opposite or pivoted end forms a cam for raising the bolt and withdrawing the lug D from its engagement with the openings (1 d, whenever the lever E is thrown to the right or left as the case may be. The cammed part of the lever E is also notched or toothed and meshes with advances or contracts thebolts, according to:
the way it is to be thrown, when the spring C engages the lug D with the opposite notch d, or d. It will thus be seen that a very simple, yet safe and durable device is formed,
which can be made cheaply, and in which the throwing lever will always be flush with the door when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the bolt and bolt plate with a throwing lever, having an oval formed toothed cam on its pivoted end, which disengages and throws the bolt, in the manner described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bolt plate, having the raised portion to rest the bolt and two openings to engage the'bolt and lock it, with a bolt adapted to be so engaged and locked, and a spring for engaging it with the openings, and a lever for disengaging and throwing the bolt, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER ANGUS.
