To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERSKINE Lower Soon, a resident of Grandview, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.

' vl y invention relates to latches, and more particularly to that class of latches which are used in connection with barn doors.

An object of my invention is to provide a latch which may be constructed of inexpensive material and thereby sold at a very low cost.

A further object of .my invention is to provide a latch which is so constructed as to assure its durability and capability.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts; as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several parts, and in which,

vention, 1 designatesa door and 2 designates a door frame of any novel type, I not limiting myself to any specific form whatsoever.

Suitably positioned upon the door 1 and preferably near the edge thereof is a keeper 3 which is provided with the cutout portion at, said cutout portion being provided for a purpose that will presently appear.

Positioned upon the door frame 2 is a base plate 5 on which are form-ed bolt guiding flanges 6, the said flanges having a lever 7 pivotally mounted therebetween. Formed upon the lever 7 is an elongated extension 8 which extension serves a purpose that will the u pstanding portions 6 and one end of the same may project beyond the member 9 and engage the slot 4. I have provided the base plate 1, a lug 12 which limits the backward movement of the member 10 as will be readily recognized upon reference to the drawing. I further provide a member 13 which is preferably constructed of heavy wire, the said member adapted to engage one end of the lever 7 when the same is in the position as shown in Fig. 2 whereby the said lever is held against move- I ment.

It is thought from the foregoing disclosure that the operation of my improved latch will be understood. I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to any specific member to which my invention is to be attached, that is, I may position a base plate 5 either upon a door or door frame and the bracket 3 on either as well.

From the foregoing it is thought that the advantages and novel features of my improved device will be appreciated.

I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.

It will be noted that the extension 8 is eccentrically disposed with respect to the pivot of the lever 7. It will also be seen by reference to Fig. 2, that the extension 8 and the adjacent faces of the lugs 11 are so proportioned and shaped as to provide for engagement of the extension 8, securely, with both lugs 11. By reason of this on gagement, and also by reason of the lever locking means 13 and the engagement be tween the cross guide bar 9 on the forward lug 11, the bolt is securely locked in a shot or locked position.

It will also be noted that there is considerable play between the lugs 11 and the extension 8 in the position shown in Fig. 3, which play provides for the subsequent locking action of the extension 8, in the position shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a door fastening means, a keeper carried by the door, a base plate carried by the door frame and having parallel bolt guiding flanges, a bolt slidable on said base plate between said flanges and having lugs spaced apart from each other with the adj acent faces of the lugs diverging from their bases toward their ends, a cross guide bar mounted on said flanges and acting as a stop limiting movement of the bolt in a hot or locking direction and holding said bolt between said flanges, and a lever pivotally mounted on and disposed between said flanges and having an extension lying between said lugs and adapted to actuate said bolt by engagement therewith, substantially as described.

2. In a door fastening means, a keeper, a bolt guiding means, a bolt in said guiding means adapted to be shot into and out of said keeper and provided with lugs having rounded adjacent faces, a lever pivoted on said guiding means and having a camshaped extensioneccentricall disposed with respect to the pivot of sai lever and arranged to engage both of said lugs when said lever is in a locking position, a stop engaging said bolt when the same is shot, and means for securing said lever in a lock-V ing position, substantially as described.

3. In a door fastening means, a keeper, bolt guiding means, a bolt in said guiding means adapted to be shot into and out of said keeper and provided with lugs spaced apart from each other, a lever pivoted on said guiding means and provided with a bolt actuating extension reduced in thickness with respect to the space between said lugs to fit loosely therebetween when said bolt is out of a shot osition and adapted toengage both of said lugs when the bolt is shot to resist movement of the bolt in opposite directions, and means for holding said lever in a position to shift said extension into en: gagement with bothof said lugs and lock the bolt in a shot position, substantially as described.
