. L. c. STRONG.
` sAsH HOLDER.
No. 244,405. Patented Ju1y19,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
LEVI C. STRONG, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK..
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,405, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed ,July 13, 1880. (No model.) f
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI O. STRONG, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-locks in which a cam made in the form of a section of a spiral screw-thread operated by a lever is made to operate a locking-bolt to throw it forward to crowd it against the jamb or draw it back, as may be selected.
The object of my invention is to operate the locking-bolt in opposite directions by means of a spiral cam provided with a finger-lever, which lever will operate as aV means for holding the sash from suddenly falling when the sash is being unlocked. 1 attain this object by means of the several parts and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in I t Figure 1 represent-s sections of a jamb and a sash and a perspective view of the sash-lock. Fig. 2 is a plan view from the lower side of the device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a view taken in the transverse at line No.1 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking-bolt. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the cam and its finger-lever, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the retaining-piece.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A is the jamb of the casing, in which the sash B works freely in either direction vertically. Secured to the said sash, as shown' in Fig. 1, is my improved locking device, composed of the locking-bolt C, cam D, with ngenlever E, and retaining-plate F. The locking-bolt G is made in the form shown in Fig. 5, with sliding part a, serrated head b, and notch c. The cam D is made in the form of a section of a spiral or screw thread on a hub, and is provided with pintles d dfon which the said cam works. Made with said cam is the linger-lever, by which lever the cam is operated. The retainingplate F is made in the form shown in Fig. 7, and is provided with the orice f, having a width corresponding with the length of the -hub of the cam D and an extension of length corresponding with the diameter of said cam. Made solid with said plate, and extending downward from the lower a. moves when saidvlocking-bolt is operated.
The said plate is also provided with countersunk holes for receiving screws s, for securing the said plate and all the parts of my improved device in place with the sash. These partsthe locking-bolt O, .cam D, and its nger-lever E and retaining-plate-are arranged together in the manner substantially as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4., and secured in Vtheir respective places in the sash B.
'lo place the several parts in proper order iu the sash, the edge of one of the side rails of the sash is recessed to receive the h'ead b of the locking-bolt. The face side of the sash is also recessed to receive the sliding portion of said bolt, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Another and deeper recess, m, is made in the face side of said sash, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, which recess receives the cam D. The locking-bolt will then be placed by entering its sliding part in the recess on the face of the sash and its head portion in the recess in the edge of the same. The cam D is then placed in its recess m, with the spiral portion entering notch c made in the locking-bolt. The retaining-plate F will then be slipped over the finger-lever E of the cam and turned quarter around, so as to cause the bearings e e to receive pintles d d of cam I), and the guiding-tlange g to bear against the edge of the sliding part c of bolt A, opposite from the edge having notch c, as indicated bydotted lines in Fig. 1, and shown by full lines in Figs. 2 and 3.
When it is desired to lock the sash at any place moved to, the operator will only be required to press the nger-lever downward toward the sash, when the spiral cam will work against the side of notch o, toward head b of thelocking-bolt, and force the said bolt with great pressure forward, so as to cause the seri rated head to bear against the jamb A. This will cause the opposite side rail ot' the said sash to press against its jamb, when the sash will be locked from moving.
When it is desired to unlock the sash the operator will throw the nger-lever upward, when the cam will be turned, and will cause the spiral portion to bear against the side of notch c of the bolt, so as to carry said bolt back and draw its serrated head from contact with the jamb, when the sash may be moved.
`It will be readily observed that the cam, when operated to throw the locking-bolt for- Ward to hold it against the jamb, will receive the resistance in a direction parallel with the axis on which it revolves, and that :no amount of pressure exerted on the said cam through the locking-bolt will be capable of causing the same to be turned back.
It will also be readily observed that when the operator throws the finger-leverE upward to throw the locking-bolt back, the instant the said locking-bolt is oft' from contact with ja-mb A the sash (not supported by counterbalancing-weights) would naturally fall, and that the upward lifting ot' the nger-bolt will check the fall of the sash as the operator exerts an upward pressure on said ngenlever, and that the operator may by said lever permit the sash to slowly descend, or he may raise the same to a higher plane.
It will also be observed that the retainingplate, by means of the orifice j and bearings ce, retains the cam in place from shifting, and by means of the guiding-liange z holds the lookin g-bolt in place so as to freely move when the cam is operated.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sash-lock, the combination, with the retaining-plate F, provided with bearings e e, orifice f, and guiding-flange z, of the cam D, made in the form of a section of a spiral or screw thread, and provided with finger-lever E, and the locking-bolt C, provided with notch c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LEVI C. STRONG.
