UNITED l STATES PATENT OFFICE.
sAMUELo. CLARK, oF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
Doon-CHECK.
To all whom t mag/concern:
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL C. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, inthe county of Jeerson, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to wlich it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to doors, and more particularly to checks therefor, andhas for its object to provide a check by means of which a door may be held against movement and which will be connected with the knob of the door for operation when the knob is turned.
Another object is to provide a check embodying the above features which will be especially adapted for use in connection with doors of railway-oars and which may be easily applied to the doors without altering the construction thereof.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind Which will be extremely simple and which may be manufacturedA at a low figure.
Other objects and advantages will be ape parent from the following description, and it will be understood that modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. A
In-the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of a door provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the door, showing the latch in engagement with the latch-block. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the doorlock and the sprocket engaged with the knob-shaft and showing a special form of lock. Fig.v 11 is a view of the upper portion of a door, showing the bolt applied thereto and showing the bracket with which the bolt is engaged. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a door, showing a modified form of the invention in which the mechanism is located in the thickness of the door and a portion thereof is Specification of Letters Patent.

free side.` The boltV includes a spring 7, which holds the sliding member 6 thereof yieldably projected in position to engage a block 8, secured to the floor in a suitable position. The door has the usual lock 9 secured thereto, which includes a revoluble latch-operating shaft 10, this shaft being rectangular in orossesection, as is usual, and having knobs 11 engaged with its ends, the knobs being held in position by set-screws 12.
The present invention also includes a sprocket-wheel 13, having a central rectangular opening 14, in which the shaft 1() is removably engaged, and it will be seen that when the shaft is rotated to release the latch of the door the sprocket-wheel will be rotated therewith. b
A sprocket-chain 15 has a loop a at one end engaged with the sprocket-wheel, the teeth of the latter being engaged in the links of the chain, and the chain is secured at its other end to the sliding member 6 of the bolt. It will thus be seen that when the shaft is rotated the member 6 will be raised to move it out of -position to engage the block 8.
In Fig. 2 the chain 15 is shown incased in a lmetallic tube 19, which is secured to the face of the door by means of screws 20, and this tube is broken away for a portion of its length to show the chain.
It will be readily seen that the bolt 6 may be secured to the upper portion of the door, if desired, and that when this is done a bracket 21 is provided, as shown in Fig. 5, this bracket being secured in a suitable position and being arranged for engagement by the member 6 to hold the door in the desired position. It will be readily seen that by reason of the specific construction of the parts the invention may be easily attached to any door without altering the structure of the latter.
In Fig. 3 there is shown a view, partly in section, of a special lock in connection with which the present check is used, a portion of the lock being broken away. The lock comprises a casing B, having a recess C in its outer face, and this recess lies concentric with the shaft-bearing D, in which the shaft 10 is revolubly engaged. The sprocket wheel 13 in this form of the invention lies within the recess C, and the chain 15 passes through a passage E, formed in the casing and communicating With the recess C, the chain passing out of the passage and beyond IOO IIO
the lock and being connected with the bolt, as in the previously-described construction. In Fig. 6 there is shown a construction in which the sprocket-wheel 13 is engaged with` be omitted.
What is claimed is- 1. In a door-check, thecombination with a lock including a casing and a spindle mounted in the casing, said casing having a recess in one of its faces and having a passage formed therein communicating with the said. recess, of a sprocket-gear carried by the spindle, 'a bolt slidably mounted upon the door, and a sprocket-chain connected at one of its ends to the said bolt and provided at the other of its ends Awith a loop engaged upon the said sprocket-gear and encircling the Same.
2. A door-check comprising a casing having a recess therein and having a spindle mounted therein and lying concentric with the recess, said spindle eXtendin outwardly of the casing, a sprocket carried IW the spindle and lying within the recess, said casing having a passage Jformed therein and communicating with the recess, a bolt mounted upon the door, and a chain connected at one of its ends with the bolt and provided at the other of its ends with a loop engaged with and encircling said sprocket-gear.
I n testimony whereof I aHiX my signature yin presence of two witnesses.
