SAMUEL L. KLEBER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TBUNK-FASTENER.
Application filed November 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. KLEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trunk fasteners and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means to enable the locking of the lid to a receptacle, to the body portion thereof, particularly the lid of a trunk to a trunk body, without the employment of the ordinary trunk lock positioned centrally with respect to the lid and trunk body.
Further objects of the invention are to provide means associated with the trunk lid fastener to enable the locking of the lid to the trunk body and which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, and inexpensive.
Further objects of the invention are to provide means associated with a trunk lid fastener for the purpose of using additional locks thereto, in the customary or well known type of trunk lids the ordinary locks are used thereon and the same key is used for the purpose of locking and unlocking any make of trunk.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is an elevation of a trunk fastener in accordance with this invention, the latter being inverted. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a trunk fastener in accordance with this invention, the latter being inverted. Fig. 3 is a detail of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a trunk body and 2 a lid. Each of the forms is shown in an inverted position.
' Secured to the lid 1, by the hold fast devices 3, is a plate 4 having an offset portion Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 61,786.
5, to which is pivotally connected a hasp 6 of the well known form employed in trunk lid fasteners. The hasp 6 has a transverse slot 7 at the free end thereof. The elements referred to, with the exception of the slot 7, are of the well known type.
Secured to the lid 2 is a plate 8, having an opening 9 to enable the fingers to engage the hasp 6 to release the same when occas1on so requires. The plate 8 has an offset portion 10 which is adapted to be surrounded by the hasp or fastener member 6 when the lid is secured to the body. The elements 8 and 10 are of known construction.
Secured to the lid 2, by the rivets 11, is a coupling member 12, having a loop 13 into which is connected a link 14 and said link 14 is adapted to extend through the slot 7 and receive a lock whereby the lid will be locked to the trunk body and by the employ ment'of such lock, it is not necessary to use the central lock now ordinarily employed with trunks.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3 the hasp or fastener member is indicated at 15, and it is formed with a horizontal slot 16. The difference between the modifications shown in Fig. 3 and the form shown in Fig. 1 is that the slot 16 extends at right angles to the slot 7. The coupling element is indicated at 1'8 and link at 19. The links 14 and 19 are pointed somewhat, as at 20, to facilitate the entrance of such links through the slots, hasp or fastener member 6.
lVhat I claim is 1. The combination with a pivoted fastener member adapted to be secured to one section of a receptacle and provided with a slot, of a coupling member adapted to be secured to the other section of a receptacle and provided with a link capable of extending through said slot for the reception of means to lock said fastener member.
2. The combination with a pivoted fastener member adapted to be secured to one section of a receptacle and provided with a slot, of a coupling member adapted to be secured to the other section of a receptacle and provided with a link capable of extending through said slot for the reception of means to lock said fastener member, said link being pivotally connected to said coupling member and having a pointed end.
3. The combination with a trunk lid fastener having its hasp or fastener member provided with a slot, of a coupling member adapted to have one end secured to a receps tacle and its other end project through said slot, said projecting end provided with a link adapted to receive means for locking the said fastener member.
4. The combination with a trunk lid fastener having its hasp or fastener member provided with a slot, of a coupling member adapted to have one'end secured to a receptacle and its other end project through said slot, said projecting end provided with :1
