ROBERT E. MATTHEWS, OF SAN ANGELO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD TO SAMUEL L. POWELL AND ONE-THIRD T0 CHARLES C. KIRKPATRICK, OF SAN ANGELO, TEXAS.
HASP-FASTENER.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Angelo, in the county of Tom Green and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to looks and latches, and has for an object to provide a device for easily and efliciently locking closures with respect to the casings thereof.
Among other features, the invention has in view a body portion provided with an eye at one end thereof, the said eye being adapted for engagement with a staple secured in a door casing or the like, a spring loop formed at the other end of the body portion and adapted to engage a staple secured to a closure or the like and finger grips, one formed at the outer end of the said loop and the other formed between the outer end of the said loop and the said eye.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view disclosing my device in applied position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing my fastener depending from a closure casing and disengaged from the closure thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my device showing the same constructed of an integral piece of heavy wire.
Referring more particularly to the views,
. I employ a body portion 10 having formed at one end thereof an eye 11 and having the other end thereof bent in U-shaped form constituting a spring loop 12, the said loop being provided with a shoulder 13, and having a finger grip 14 formed at the outer end of the said loop, with a second finger grip 15 formed on the body portion 10 adjacent the inner end of the said loop.
In use, the latch described is mounted on a door casing 16, the said eye 11 being mounted on a suitable staple 17 secured to the casing 16 and the staple or receiving catch 18 is secured to the closure 19, the loop 12 being adapted to be received by the staple formed at its 18 so that the shoulder 18 will abut against one of the sides of the staple 18, thus holding the closure 19 in locked position relative to the casing 16. The loop 12 of the fastener is preferably made of spring metal or material and when it is desired to disengage the loop from the staple 18, pressure is brought to bear upon the finger grips 14, 15, thus moving the outer end of the loop 18 toward the body portion 10 and disengaging the shoulder 13 from contact with the staple 18 so that the loop 12 can be easily withdrawn from the staple 18, thus permit-ting the door or closure 19 to be opened relatively to the casing 16.
My device is preferably made of one piece of material and as shown in Fig. 3, can be formed of a piece of heavy wire bent to constitute the body portion 20 having an eye 21 outer end with the said wire bent backwardly upon the body portion 20 and terminating in a finger grip 22, the other end of the said wire being bent to form a U-shaped loop 23 provided with a shoulder 24 and having its end terminating in a finger grip 25. In application, the one piece fastener described is in all respects similar to that fastener described in the early part of the specification.
Having thus fully described the invention, what-I claim as new, is
1. In a fastener, the combination ofabody portion provided at one end with an eye adapted to receive therethrough a staple, a U-shaped loop integrally formed at the other end of the said body portion and ofiset from the plane of the body portion, a finger grip formed at the outer end of the said loop, a second finger grip formed at the inner end of the said loop and in alinement with the first-mentioned finger grip and a shoulder integrally formed on the said loop between the ends thereof, the said shoulder being 1formed by offsetting a portion of the said 2 In a fastener constructed of an integral piece of material, a body portion having one end thereof bent to form an eye, the said end being then twisted around the said body portion and terminating in a finger grip and the other end of the said body portion being bent in a substantially U-shaped form hav- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ifing a fingerfgrip 3t itslouteiil end, a sefcorllld in presence of two witnesses.
